FWIW, I got a small 12 volt air compressor for <$20, broke open the plastic case and disassembled enough to fit the thing into my 3 inch PVC tool tube. If needed it can be easily reassembled and connected to the battery. The tool tube is mounted to the front engine mount by way of two right angle brackets. The brackets were made by cutting a right angle bracket I found in the floor joist hardware in a local Revy/Rona. The tube is mounted by way of two 3/8 inch carriage bolts with fender washers (big OD thin washers) inside the tube to add strength. A length of 1/4" by 3 inch aluminium plate is held between the tube and the mounting brackets by holes for the carriage bolts. Long gear type hose clamps go around the tube and aluminium plate near the outboard ends of the tube to add strength. If needed the clamps can be removed and used for repairs. I made long clamps by putting a medium length and shorter length clamp together on each end to add versatility if needed. A 4 inch tube might have been better for capacity but would not have allowed as high a mounting while still providing tire clearance. FWIW Norm

Walmart sells a little 12v for about $8, even has a light I think, but case should be able to be stripped away. Coleman I think is the brand. I bought one with intent to tear apart, but found wrapped up in a towel makes a nice thing to keep in the tail storage of the wifes 4 wheeler as is. So not sure about how small the compressor is. Tim, if you're interested and you can do without the integrated gauge, I found a lil 12volter at Auto Zone for $12,that can be installed perfectly by strapping behind the reservoir under the starboard shroud. This pump can be left in its case, due to it's small size. I used 3 very large tiewraps and hard wired and fused power from the battery. I installed a rocker switch to the pump case, with JB Weld that no one can find but me, to prevent tampering. This way, all I carry in my tail bag is my 6ft hose with adapter on the end for the valve stem. Just plug the tube into the barbed fitting on the compressor and hit the switch. Work fine, last long time! Rod

Tim I modified a Campbell Hausfeld RP1200 12 volt air compressor to make a nice compact compressor for motorcycle trips. MCN had an article in October 2002 of the same modification except they used a RP3000 compressor to start with. If you use the RP1200 it's less work to make the modification and the compressor is cheaper. I bought the RP1200 for $9.96 in 2001. I have the MCN article that describes how to make the mods in pdf format and would be glad to send you the file. I've had the occasion to use the compressor a couple of times and it works quite well. If I recall I got it at Target ($20 or so). Like the other posts took apart the cover and kept the guts. The DC plug that came with it was not very strong and broke right away from the bouncing around in the JC trunk, upgraded it with a more solid one from Radio Shack. This one has a built in pressure guage where most don't, however with the guage will not fit into the 4" PVC tool tube. Craig A18

I've got a Porter Cable 6-gallon pancake compressor, 150psi. It does everything you are asking of it and probably more. I've even been able to run an impact wrench off of it, though I can't loosen the lugs on all four wheels of the cages without letting it charge back up. Of course I usually only do one at a time anyway, so it works out. Can't speak for any others because this is the first one I've owned, and I haven't felt the need for anything more. Small enough to move around and tuck away when not in use, big enough to make the BFH almost obsolete... da Vermonster

It's generally a good idea to get a little more than you think you need. I'd go with a 13 gal Campbell Hausfeld for around $179. There may be some times where you'd want to use air tools.
