engine slow to start

I was riding up in the mountains the other day, on highway, and after every stop I'd have to run the starter for about a minute on full choke to get the bike started.
I went from 6000ft to 9500ft and I had it loaded w/ my camping gear, combined weight of 274lbs.
Is that pretty common or is there a problem?

The spark plug ought to be "graveyard dead", as my mechanic likes to say.
Altitude makes an otherwise okay jetted bike run richer than normal.
That you were able to start it on choke baffles me.

The difficulty you describe is not at all common. The KLR 's CV carb is
almost immune to elevation changes.
Mine has started instantly and reliably in elevations ranging from 271 feet
*below* sea level

I'm not sure if *you* have a problem but the bike definitely has a problem!

Rick,
Have you checked the valve clearances? Tight valves may make your KLR hard to start.

rejetting / led tail light

There is a "plastic choke thingy" that is threaded into the left side of the carb body near the top. I seem to recall it takes a 10mm box end but it might be a 12mm. Just loosen that and pull the plunger out. Be sure everything in the vicinity is clean so you don't get dirt inside the carb...
