air pump questions

I've got an 12v air pump to pump up my air mattress and was wondering if it would be okay to add a cigarette lighter plug-in to the bike and use it while the motor was running to fill my mattress?
Would I hook it up to the battery w/ a fuse on the positive side for protection?.
Also for a flat or low tire is there an inexpensive tire pump somebody can recommend?

It would certainly be OK.
I wired an outlet into the rear (downward facing portion) of the left side panel, with an inline fuse and a switch. I used an alternator connector near the battery so it is quick connect and disconnect.
For an air compressor, I have two: A smallish one by "Slime" with built=in gauge and cable management. I think I paid 20 bucks for it and it has worked very well for years. It's cheap, banged up and has gone with me everywhere. Every year or so I take it apart and lube the piston.
The other is a much larger "Master Flow" that pumps much better, but has a nasty habit of blowing fuses as it has a very high momentary startup current. I paid way more for it and while it airs faster, it is a source of endless frustration.

I run an air pump that way for my tyres. Same plug works for the electric vest. Always with the motor running.

Most motorcycle charging systems don t start charging until a very fast idle. At idle they are actually discharging.

I've found that my KLR can inflate 2 or 3 tires and it will still start just fine.
I don't think you need to worry about running the bike unless your battery is old or weak.

Which is why I groan whenever I hear someone claim they took care of their
stored bike by starting up and letting it run for several minutes every so
often.
The oil never really gets hot - which only distributes any condensation
evenly throughout the engine ("My poor, poor bearin's!! "- Mr.Scott)
and the battery gets discharged a little more: Bad ju-ju for a parked bike.

Thanks gentlemen,
I'll be working on the bike this weekend and will put this information to use;
* Is there a recommened spot to mount the lighter plug?
* By "high Idle" should I bee looking for a minimum tack reading such as 2000rpm?
I'm going to loading my travel gear on it for the first time this weekend also, so I'll try posting a picture when I'm done.
This'll be my 1st trip so it's going to be a short shake-down cruise:)

Your charging system will put out a little as low as 1000-1500 rpm but the faster you run the engine the more it will put out up to the regulator cut-off point. Not sure what that is on a KLR but I d guess around 2500-3000 rpm. At 2000 rpm your KLR should be charging.
I sell a dash that you can mount outlets, switches, gauges, etc. etc.

I have heard this before, but funny (maybe an electrical type can explain) when I attach my Fluke to the battery on my KLR at idle the voltage is higher than when rev'd to around 4k.
I know voltage is different than amperage so I may have just guessed part of the reason ?

It may have nothing to do with it, but I know Despain has done some work with Kawasaki in the past, including a "history of" documentary on Kawasaki a few years ago. I'd say as far as Aerostich and Ortieb goes he is a fan, especially if they sponsered him their gear. I know I would proudly use it. I'll have to check in to that though I'd like to see some of his pieces.

Am I the only one but, did anyone see the Speed Channel, Wind Tunnel 4 minute TV piece of Dave Despain going to Prudhoe Bay on his Red/Silver late model KLR last night? Awesome! Looks like he's on a month trip and will do weekly show reports from the bike and wherever he is. Like 3 minute video pieces. Looks like he's a fan of Ortlieb and Aerostitch.
You would think that a guy with endless funds could choose any andvenure bike he wanted in any CC. But he chose our trusty KLR.
I have such a big smile right now.
