doohickey (balancer chain) adjustment - how often?

Hey guys, hope all is well. put on about 90 miles in some real heat for Minnesota (92degrees but the heat index was 115 - go figure) Anyhow, got home and noticed the chain noise to be louder and grindier than usual, thus left it running hot, organized some tools, got a tool onto the adjustment nut, Shut it off, loosened a turn and a half or so. Wiggled it, knocked on the engine with a wood block. Snugged up the adjuster nut and "viola". Started it up seconds later and it was markedly quieter. the chain noise is now more of a whir and not so tinny / grindy.
I had replaced the doohickey about 2 years ago and this is the second adjustment I have made. I have probably run 800miles or so - not more- since the last adjustment at the end of riding last year. I bring it up to you all on the list because I am curious:
1. how often do most people make this adjustment?
2. Do you often notice such a stark difference in the sound? Maybe it was the total heat soak that had my balancer chain quite sloppy, but the good news is the adjuster worked fine and quieted it up just like it's supposed to. I guess this is the way you're supposed to do it. in a totally heat soaked engine. bike ran great, just getting a bit noisy in the heat. (maybe my bike is sensistive to the "heat index") now after the adjustment it is quiet again.
