There will be no advantage to raising boiling temperature under normal circumstances and the disadvantage will be increased strain on the radiator tanks and core tubes. I wouldn't wish to use a higher pressure cap on a KLR although it can be an advantage on some cage applications.

The reverse of the above. The KLR runs under some pretty tough conditions so the cooling system may be allowed to boil if a lower pressure cap is substituted. The radiator cap is routinely neglected on bikes and cages, sometimes to the detriment or destruction of very expensive engines. Since inspection, cleaning of sealing surfaces and correct installation is not rocket science, I wonder why. Can it be that it seems so much more interesting and sophisticated to spend time and money on additives, cooling system enhancements and the like rather than maintaining the lowly rad cap? FWIW Norm

Lately my KLR is running hot. Anything over 85F outside temp, or slow off road and the heat gage tends to go up to the "fan on" area, which is just right of center on my gage. I did not have this last year. Yeseterday (80F)I did some slow speed, first gear trail riding and the fan came on almost immediately. On the road it is fine, operating left of center most of the time. I changed the fluids this year and it is topped off. I'm pretty sure the mix is 50/50.

Top posted, Will Robinson, Top posted!! (remember that?) Is the fan running when called on? Had the relay go south on my 2003 while in AK, radiator was full of AK Haul Road gumbo, too.. Check temp sensor. Run a hot wire from battery to see where current is not passing. BTW, I think the ground wire is the switched feed, which is why the fan will occassionaly run after ignition is off so you may need to jump around the temp switch to diagnos other components. Don M

Not Boiling, nothing melted, and fan runs when just north of middle sounds pretty normal to me. When I play offroad the fan runs alot and alot more when I am really playing in the sugar sand pits in Upper Michigan since I surf it everywhere making roaster tails. B-) Dooden A15 Green Ape

Hey all,
 
I am a bit disappointed that no one replied to my Corbin Seat Post, considering some of the pointless conversations people are having here, but that is not important now.
 
I was riding today in the blistering heat and humidity of Houston TX and in stop and go traffic it seemed that my 09 would just about to reach the red-lne, and then the stoplight would turn green and it would hover a quarter from the red-line during riding. I checked the fan and it works and checked the fluid couple of days ago. So, the question is this normal for KLRs? I was planning to go to Big Bend sometime soon and now I am reconsidering waiting until it gets colder here which is a few months. Do these bikes easily overheat?

I had that problem- found that the intake manifold wasn't tightened down. It was sucking air and revved high when hot.  Tightened it down and the problem was solved.

2 of my KLR's had this problem. What I did was to hog out the pilot jet 3 sizes up, & put a couple washers under the needle. These engines are jetted very lean for EPA regs, causing them to run hot. True of all machines brought to usa. BTW the DynoJet kit will also fix this problem, but at a bit of cost in MPG. Go conservative and the MPG is not so much a dip, but the cooling is great- as well as longevity of the engine. Shane

My fan cools mine down ('07) even on the hottest days here in California (~100F).  Is something blocking the air flow?  Shroud gone?  Fan running backwards? (not likely). I don't know how to check coolant flow, but that could be the problem. It's under warranty, right?  Give the dealer a chance at it is my best advice. Robert P. Try putting a Thermo Bob on it worked for me,i live in B.C. Canada and my early rides in the spring the engine would never get up to operating temp,i could go on about how it works better you go to the site,thermobob.com i belive it works for overheating engines to,not sure,I'm no mechanic and i found it easy to install. You can also get a switch that runs to your fan that lets you control when the fan comes on,"IE" in traffic throw the switch so it stays on all the time till you get moving on the HWY,hope this helps.                                                                   Stu. +2 on jetting.  Helps a lot.  There's a 101 ways to tackle it but do bit of reading to see what would work best for you.  I spent a few cents on stainless washers at Ace which worked perfectly.  Take out the plug on the carb air adjustment screw and you'll be a happy camper.  There's a ton of information here on all the details.  Time to get to know your bike.  You'll be glad you did.
