There is a lot of philosophy wrapped up in the term "rise above the urge
toward retribution". For instance, who actually decided that ignoring
deliberate nastiness was above the various alternatives? If you turn the
other cheek every time, you will run out of places to be hit. Should
deliberate nastiness be ignored? Most would say "No".
