Hello everyone, I just purchased a 12 v cig lighter. I was wondering... do I need to add a fuse kit to it? Your guys input would be great. Thanks.

I dont know about fuses if you use the city lights power. I figured it was already fused. What I do know is that my kit didnt have enough ground wire to reach anything but the TURN SIGNAL ground. Big mistake. Everytime I turn on my right blinker, the power to the light blinks on and off. This makes my gps go ceazy beeping, and stopped my phone from xharging until I turned it off.

YES you need a fuse to protect what every you plug into it. While some come with a built in fuse the ones I get for myself and have installed for several others do not. many outlets covers are more plastic, and the hinge tab breaks after while, also not very water tight. I buy mine at "West Marine", the also have locking tabs so the vibration will not keep seperating the plug from the outlet.

Rick: Many will probably suggest that when the problem starts to occur, stop and open up the gas cap, close it, then ride as hard as you were to see if the problem goes away. If opening the gas cap temporarily fixes it then the tank isn't "breathing" and isn't letting the gas drain out / feed the carb consistently. Check the breather tube (rubber) that comes off the tank under the nose of the seat and you fish down through the frame to the swing arm. Let us know if that does / doesn't fix it. Don R100, A6F

yes it needs to be fused esp. if you run a hot wire directly to the battery...you could also tap into an existing circuit which already has a fuse...depends what you are using it for...if just for charging a cellphone you can just tap into existing... Don't go over 20 amp fuse J#3

Just a quick point and I know this is a little OCD, BUT: The fuse is not in any way to protect the device you're plugging in to the 12v outlet of the bike. It is to protect the bike and the wiring harness from the device. The risk is that you may plug in a device that is shorted, or a + wire may short to ground, causing an overcurrent condition that will damage your bike's electrical system. Fuses should be wired in as close to the source of the voltage as possible. For instance, if you're taking power directly from the battery, the fusable link should be screwed directly to the battery. That way if your wire gets chafed and grounds, it will not kill your battery, electrical system or start a fire.
