surging and backfire - update - success

Post by Rick Brown » Sun Jul 17, 2011 11:49 pm

If you've been following this post, here's the last information I received from Fred. I posted it off-line by accident so here's the items I did that fixed my surging and backfiring proiblem. Hopefully online this time so the whole group get to see the fix. 1.) Re-cleaned the airfilter 2.) Dis-assembled and cleaned the gas tank lid 3.) Removed the petcock and replaced the petcock diaphgram 4.) Replaced the vacuum line (more on this) 5.) removed and checked the fuel line After all of this I took the bike back out on the interstate and although it went twice as far as before, the problem came back. This time I pulled the bike over and gave it a good looke-see. I'm glad I did because what I noticed was that when the bike gets hot the vacuum line kinks at the bends (it's the clear flexible type). To fix this I replaced the new vacuum line that was the same length as the old one, w/ another one only I made this one about 1 1/2" longer to increase the size of the bend radii. The bike runs great! I hope this helps somebody else if they've run into something similar Thanks for the help Fred Did you mean for this message to be sent to just me or the whole list? Your petcock has a vacuum operated shut off valve and will only flow fuel when the engine is running or cranking over. The vacuum opens the shut off valve so that fuel can flow through this valve. If your engine is off, the fuel will not flow through on the on or reserve position. The "hissing" you are hearing is the gas cap vent letting air into the tank. Gas won't flow out of the tank unless air is let back in. The gas cap vent has been known to get dirty and restricts the air moving back into the tank. This is the noise that you are hearing. I'd check your gas cap vent to see that is is venting properly. Be careful since there are some small springs and balls in the cap that can be easily lost. Good luck and let the list know what you have found out. However when I got off at the next exit and started back at about 75-80mph it started the surging problem again, but less than before. By the time I got close to home I noticed that it wouldn't idle anymore at stop lights. It seems to be running hotter than it used to, as in the temp gauge was reading 5/8-3/4 rather than at 1/2 and the gas tank was emitting a steady hisssss. When I disconnected the fuel line from the carb and turned the petcock to open/reserve it wouldn't drain, is that normal? The work; Drained the tank, removed/cleaned/inspected the petcock and replaced the diphgram and put in new fuel Removed/blew-out w/ a compressor/inspected the fuel line and vacuum line Removed the tank vent line on the back of the tank and lifted the tank lid and blew it out. replaced the line Removed/re-cleaned the air filter I bought a can of seafoam on the way home and will add it tomorrow. Thanks for all the help so far, Do you have any other suggestions? [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Or, you could just have used Seafoam! 3/4 can in the tank, and you drink the other 1/4 of the can. Seafoam works great! FYI, read the instructions carefully before drinking it......... Eddie

folding chair for canping

Post by eddiebmauri » Mon Jul 18, 2011 8:17 am

IMHO, any chair that you get for camping should NOT have an X frame under the seat. After a while, your thighs get numb from pressing against the metal bars of the X frame. Unless you are Karen Carpenter skinny. Eddie
