clutch adjustment?

Post by Charlie Y » Sat May 28, 2011 1:16 pm

Well I rode to work Friday and when I leave at 6:00 , it wouldn't start. My three year old Yuasa Gel died. That's not the problem though. I pushed her to the top of the parking garage twice to try and push start. But it would push in gear with the clutch pulled . I tried to get it rolling in neutral then put it in gear. Does this indicate a need for clutch adjustment or mayabe something worse? It still wouldn't start. I had to get the guy across the street at the tire place to come over with a starting pack. I had a new battery in it by noon Saturday. When riding, I don't notice any clutch drag when I'm stopped at a light. -- charlie [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Was the bike in 1st gear or 2nd? Try 2nd gear, if you haven't already. (slightly better mechanical advantage for the wheel over the engine.) eddie

Eddie-- I never have got one to start in 2d. Must be that high-compression Teal or Tactical Green series. In my experience-- You need to be going 'as fast as two 'fat-men' can push it', preferably going down hill and the bike in neutral. Jump on the bike (left foot on the peg, swing leg over). With the clutch in, select 3rd gear, (2d fat man pushing vigorously--) Standing on the pegs, simultaneously, drop your butt onto the seat and drop the clutch. Small use of throttle when it fires. Remember, at this speed, a bike will normally stall, so be ready to engage the clutch when/if it starts. NOTE: Use the appropriate amount of enricher for the OAT. Now that it did not start, Take off your riding jacket, loosen your pants (please keep the helmet and gloves!). check fuel = 'ON' check the key 'ON' Kill switch = "RUN" Oh. No Virgina, it will not start with kill switch 'OFF'. Push, drag bike back up hill. Repeat (with success) Yeah, that is what works...Key ON, kill switch RUN. PUSH: As fast as two fat men can run, then, third gear. No kidding, anything less than your fastest sprint, it will be hard to start, at least in my experience. You really have a lot of piston and fly-wheel mass to engage when you drop that clutch. revmaaatin. who has looked like the three stooges all by himself while push starting a KLR!

About 10 years ago I was having breakfast at a Hotel in San Diego. There were 4 CHP motorcycle officers at a nearby table. I spotted their BMWs in the parking lot. I walked up to the table and said, "I hate you guys. You get paid to ride those bike on some of the best roads California has to offer. I hate you guys." I was grinning from ear to ear. As they left the parking lot, each one of them pulled a wheelie as I stood watching. They didn't have to wave.

clutch adjustment?

Post by Michael Martin » Sat May 28, 2011 10:37 pm

Charlie, The bike has a wet clutch, which will have some clutch drag because of the engine oil on the plates. It will be hard to push the bike when it is in gear. So you will have to push it as fast as possible in neutral, then shift to second or third and let out the clutch. Adjustment of the clutch is covered in the owner's manual. In short, the lever should pull away from the lever bracket 2 to 3 mm. when the lever is moved to take up the play in the cable.
