I don't follow the "fighting traffic" and "stock muffler is way to quiet" logic. If you are going for more sound in the interest of "safety", loud pipes don't save lives, they p*ss people off. Noone ever thanked me for riding a loud motorcycle. I have had someone express gratitude for having a quiet one, however. Think about it: The bike travels forward. The exhaust sound travels rearward. Head on, they couldn't hear you anyway. Exmaple: Having stood near the fence as Indy cars rounded the nearest turn at 150mph+ to head down the straight in front of me, I could hear the rush of air around the car better than I could hear the unmuffled exhaust .... right up until they passed in front of me. Then it was an insanely loud explosion of sound and they were gone again. If the wind was right, I could hear the same exhaust sounds *15 miles away* at my house. Again, with them right coming at me just yards away, I could hear almost nothing. $0.02 worth of advice from a former courier: Get a brighter headlight bulb like a 55/60 Silverstar or even one of the Osram bulbs with the yellow bulb around the actual bulb - for conspicuity. Wear brighter clothing and maybe get a Stebel Compact Nautilus air horn. You'll be a bit safer & your neighbors will continue to like you. Unless they pull out in front of you. Then can give 'em an earful. "Hooooooooonk!" ;) eddie

All good points Eddie. As a pedal biker I thank every motorcyclist that passes me without deafening me for the rest of the day. Even on a pedal bike by the time I hear a motorcycle it's pretty much on top of me - in my F150 with the stereo going the loud pipe isn't going to help. safe riding, Vik Banerjee threeohm@... www.thelazyrando.com

FYI, I do wear a bright jacket with padding, have a xenon bright lightbulb, drive very carefully, make sure that the driver sees me before I pass him. I usually do not ride fast so I know that being loud won't help. But when I'm going 5mph in city traffic I would like to make a bit more presence. If I'm going 5mpg between two lanes on a bridge ppl don't see me so I tap my horn lightly which is way more annoying then making a little noise with the muffler. I shoudnt be going in-between the cars in the first place but it happens Guys, trust me I know pipes don't save lives and I hate super loud bikes. So, any mods/muffler recomendations? -David Z mobile: 646.267.1109 -please download our free single www.thevanguardband.com

I did the low buck mod and really liked it. It wasn't that loud and I could just barely feel an improvement in performance. I pulled the inner perforated tube and formed up a cone and had a muffler shop weld it on for me. Since then that bike has come and gone and I built another. 99% of the bike is made from used parts. The muffler, an older FMF Q something for a KLX or KLR is SOOO much lighter than the stocker. I do a lot of trail riding so I like the weight reduction. It also flows better and I can tell it wakes the bike up. It's loud. Right up until you get going at a constant speed and then it's just as quiet as the gutted stock muffler was. I've rev'd the engine a coupla times as anal injected cranium drivers adjacent to me started to merge into my lane. It worked once. The dual horns on relay get folks attention more better. I've got a little over $200 in my exhaust. One of the few new parts on the bike is a FMF Power Bomb header. I got it because it's supposed to flow better while making the exhaust quieter. (I'd hate to hear the pipe w/o that header!) The pipe I got used from a friend and spent a little on fiberglass packing, rivets and black high temp bbq grill paint. I would not spend $250 or more on a similar pipe. One time on a borrowed bike I got some pretty good head shake at about 75mph. I noticed that traffic cleared a big 'ol hole around me as other drivers were probably thinking to themselves "My God, this guys gonna loose it!" So now I ride like a dickhead on a dirt bike all the time. Wander in my lane, shake a little every once in awhile... basically try to appear unstable and crazy. Works on a crowded dance floor, too. Mech Who is joking about that last part. Sorta.

// I shoudnt be going in-between the cars in the first place but it happens // Here in California, it is legal and I do it every single day on the 405 (according to Dr. Greg Frazier, "the most dangerous road in the world"), and I would absolutely NOT ride that road without splitting lanes. Never. The most common accident is a rear-end collision on the freeways around here, and the last place you want to be on a bike is "between the hammer and the anvil". I'd much rather take a 10MPH hit from the side than get smashed between two soccer moms in their behemoth SUVs. Oh, and loud pipes suck. -Jeff Khoury From: "David Zawadzki" To: "Vik Banerjee" Cc: transalp1@..., "KLR650 list" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 25, 2011 8:40:50 AM Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] KLR Muffler Replacement ?? I wouldn't joke. I've tried it. Dunno whether to call it spazz dancing or just white boys' arrhythmia, but when I start flailing, nobody wants to get near me except Shelly.

I recommend a Laser Duro Pro with the standard baffle , all stainless, no fiberglass, quiet, just a slightly deeper tone, way better exhaust flow, and lighter. A Sparky add-on arrester for USFS roads as Laser Duro Pro's only Euro arrester certification. I'll record mine on a short video. 80/100 watt headlight with Pashnit headlight relay kit helps visibility with Trailtech Equinox LED, 3 power level LED auxiliary lights on either side of the front fork. (Will be in the video) A larger output Stator helps with all this if used with a Gerbing jacket liner (77 watts) or vest (44 watts). All this almost makes as visible as when I ride my '06 Hayabusa, that bike appears more like a passing comet to traffic, Ha. Mark on an '07 KLR in mostly empty Nevada. I had a bike pass me on a country road last weekend on a loud bike ( A Ducati I think but it came around so fast it was hard to tell). I knew he was coming too way before I ever saw him. He was loud. I was in my car. Point is I have heard this argument before about you really can't hear a loud bike coming up from behind. I disagree. I always know when and where a loud Hoggly is in my blind spot. My bikes are all quiet but I know where the loud ones are. And you are correct, they piss people off. Doesn't bother me so much. Criswell Sent from my iPad

Laser Pro Duro: Laser's own dyno graph shows zero improvement in hp, doesn't show any torque info. It shows sound info too but too small for me to read and I don't know how to make the pic bigger. It also calls the tested muffler the "Stealth", which doesn't match anything else about this model muffler, so I don't know what to make of the dyno graph. It's on a page called "for the KLR650", but maybe it's more general info than that. The intro page to the Pro Duro line (http://www.laserexhausts.com/Bikes/ProductInformation/ProDuro.aspx>) shows the RX and XT, the former being for road or off-road, the latter for racing. The models for the KLR are 91.4002.A and 91.4002.B. They don't carry over the "RX" or "XT" designations, but the "B" model is almost certainly the "RX". It's also called the "homologated" model, meaning it satisfies EUROPEAN street standards for noise, etc. The site doesn't mention US standards. Miscellaneous customer reviews (various bikes) are good, but oh so subjective, and involving different jetting, air filters etc. One guy with a stock '99 KLR liked it, thought it was smoother overall, better low end. That's what I thought about the White Bros on my SR back in the day, so hey- maybe so. Laser sells a "refilling" kit, says you can go many klicks without refilling, so it's probably more maintenance free than most others. They warn that refilling takes some expertise. Kit comes with rivets for reassembly, a common method with other brands but at least one of the other mufflers I looked at uses screws (but need repacking a lot more often- that's the Vance & Hines SCR). http://www.laserexhausts.com/Bikes/Catalogue/BikeCatalogue/Catalogue.aspx?VehicleType=Bike [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

From: Flower Jamie Laser Pro Duro: Laser's own dyno graph shows zero improvement in hp, doesn't show any torque info. If you look at the graph closely, you can see the test bike making over 160 Hp. I guess it's not really a KLR650. Mike Martin, Louisville, KY [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
