how do you keep your centerstand from dragging?

Post by gremoby61 » Tue Apr 26, 2011 8:30 am

hello, I have a 2002 KLR 650, am stationed here in Germany, in Rheinland Pfalz. Lots and lots of curvy back roads. I'm always dragging my centerstand. I don't know which on it is, but it's the adjustable one I bought from fred about 1 year ago. I like it a lot, but it's always dragging. I'm running Conti Escapes (17/21), and I weigh ~250 with riding gear, and the rear shock is set on #4. I'm kind of an aggressive rider, at least not too bad, but that centerstand touching down is making me have second thoughts. Thanks, and greetings from Germany Harry

How are your fork springs? I noticed I was dragging my footpegs quite a bit until I swapped the springs out for some firmer ones. Only guessing, but I suspect the front is collapsing under cornering forces and dropping the nose of the bike enough to reduce your ground clearance considerably. eddie PS: You are in Germany with a centerstand bought from a guy in Utah. I'm in the USA with a centerstand that was made in Germany. ;-)

how do you keep your centerstand from dragging?

Forks, I know a guy that when he bought his KLR the shop had not adjusted the triple and RAISE the front of the bike from shipping standards LOWER. Gremany/USA parts, just 8 yr's ago I said I had NO INTEREST in the computors especially "THE WEB", then I learned how to use Google, (tough job HUH.LOL) and chased down a part for my boat the local shop wanted $200. for saying "Obsolete" 3 other places in other states wanted $75. (+s.h.) A boat shop just 100 north of me said he had 3, $25. SH. INCLUDED, If it does not work just call I'll send anouther right out. THEN Groups like DSN, And Repairs on things that NO "EXPERT" knows what to do, I LOVE THE NET. (Except for those watching (spying) on ME.....LOL) THANKS FRED

I suppose it would be churlish to mention that this question cannot come up if you just leave the center stand off the bike. Just one of many reasons to pass on this accessory.

Take it off. It just gets in the way. I use the bike very aggressively, rock ravens, jumping logs, etc. There are other ways, that do not add weight or get in the way when riding, to change or repair a tire when on the road. ________________________________ From: Jud To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tue, April 26, 2011 10:36:37 AM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Re: How do you keep your centerstand from dragging? I bought a bike with a center stand, back in my wayward youth. It lasted less than one day. Seriously. Gone and forgotten. I hit it on the first corner, and I took it off when I got home. So, Harry, have you ridden it in the Alps? Robert P. Wichert P.Eng LEED AP +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ===============================================

You must have been an English major. How about a rocky ravine. That's what I get for trying to multi-task. ________________________________ From: Jeff Khoury To: E Hines Cc: Jud ; DSN KLR650 DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Tue, April 26, 2011 2:33:59 PM Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] Re: How do you keep your centerstand from dragging? I think the suggestion of stiffer springs is a good one. It might help more to "hang off" in the corners. This works very well to corner fast with knobbies on, too. Dominick asked: I actually do have one serious question already and that is wether or not anyone has had problems with their oil sight glass before?? mine is reading very low, but according to the previous owner is definitenly full, (based on suggestions from here) I went out and bought some rotella T 15-40 and poured a tiny bit in to see if I could get the sight glass to budge but nothing... It rides fine though. My next step is to completely change the oil to ensure it's fille properly... But, that doesn't fix my sight glass problem and I am worried (based on reading other's experience's w/ this bike) that if it is buring oil, I wouldn't ever know... Take Care, Dominick Just to be sure, you realize that the bike must be upright, and not leaning over on the sidestand to check the oil, right?
