dogbones a little distorted

Doing the doo and lubing the swingarm. 2005 w/ 26,400 miles. Doo and spring were fine, as were the singarm bearings and grease (go figure). I use this KLR for mostly commuting and street rides so that probably explains some of it.
Both dogbones seem to have been tweaked at one end (1" lowered 'bones). The bolts don't go through without some help from a persuasive hammer. They may have gotten tweaked slightly sideways but on each bone niether bolt goes through the holes easily on one end, but on the other end both bolts just slide in.
The question:
do these dogbones need to move freely as the bike goes up and down? Or are they completely fixed and I just put it back together and forget about it? One option is put the original bones back in but I do like the height as it is.

The bolts should be tight to the suspension linkage. It is the bearings
that will move when your bike goes up and down.
