steel shavings in screen @32k mi!!
I too had my engine apart (two-halves) but at 22K miles for a transmission issue and after assembly, upon restart, many small aluminum flakes appeared on the filter and when draining the pan. I use a black plastic pan to catch the oil and after sitting a while, I was pouring it into my recycle container (local garage has a waste oil heater), I noticed the small aluminum flakes tumbling downhill along the bottom. I changed the filter & oil three times and saw less flakes each time but I needed to know more.
I took apart the right side first to look at the oil pump & clutch basket & plates (never ran clutch discs through the partswasher and the way they are lubed through the hub, they act as a macro-filter and could have held the flakes along the inner surfaces of the friction material discs) - nothing. I pulled apart the left side to look at the cam & counter-balance system chains - nothing. I pulled the valve cover - nothing. Then the head - nothing. Then the cylinder to look at the piston - nothing. At that point it's "What the Hell". I pulled the motor out and disasembled back done into the two-halves to look at the transmission - nothing. Ran everything through the partswasher and reassembled. After the second re-assembly and a 3-minute run to move oil around and get the bubles out of the cooling system, I pulled the filter and changed the oil. I still noticed a small amount of flakes but much much less than that very first time on the first reassembly.
At this point, I have convinced myself that maybe my first disassembly dislodged some hidden deposit in the oil gallery system, bearings, bearing "cups" in the alluminum cases. Since then, I've put another 8,000 miles on the bike without any problems, noises, and no aluminum flakes in the oil / filter.
