nklr (sorta) harley riders say the darndest things.
My harley-ridin' friend offered to let me try out his bike and his new heel-and-toe shifter to see what I thought of it. We rode down to my favorite coffee shop in Westwood. When we arrived, he said the sentence I thought I'd never hear uttered:
"I don't like riding your KLR on the freeway. It's too smooth and quiet."
Now, I never in my life thought I'd hear someone call a big single with a modded exhaust "too smooth and quiet" on the freeway.

Jeff (and others),
I have a stock 2007 650 and the muffler is very quiet.
I live in NYC and would like to install a louder muffler for safety
purposes.
Normally i ride my 1970 honda cb350 around the city and if i give it some
throttle while going between traffic people hear me.
I cant say the same for the klr. Its a bit dangerous.
I was also thinking of replacing the horn with a euro horn
http://klr650.com/EuroHorn.htm and need some advice.
It seems like a good option and i can plug it in the same spot as the old
one.
What do you guys think?
Can you also suggest a nice-not too loud mufler?
Many thanks,
David

I'm NOT a proponent of "Loud Pipes Save Lives".
While my exhaust is modified, it's a LITTLE bit louder than stock but I think it would still qualify as under the 93db limit.
There are many, many reasons why I don't want loud pipes, a few of them are below:
* Exhaust noise is almost all directed to the rear instead of the front, where the people you supposedly want to alert are driving.
* Wicked loud pipes damage your hearing even more than the wind noise is already doing.
* Loud pipes piss people off - and then they go off and pass stupid laws.
Now, on the horn, I'm with you. I want the loudest, most obnoxious horn I can find. I settled on the Stebel Nautilus.

Make sure you wire it up with good, thick wire and use a quality relay... not the cheap one that comes in the package. (Bosch, BW/Borg-Warner, etc.) It'll put the fear of god in 'em.

Dont get me wrong
I totally agree! I hate loud pipes and i believe there should be a limit on
how loud you can go.
If you drive by and the car alarms go on your pipes are WAY too loud.
I hate when anyone rides by with those pipes. Its overkill and many guys do
it on purpose which is even worse.
But wasnt talking about THAT kind of loud.
I just want to be heard when i rev the engine a bit.
Any recommendations?

Jud,
Your comments are ridiculous.
Why hogwash?
I definitely would not be happier on a Harley. ? I would get one (but i
didnt)
They finally came up with some nice designs this year but i still don't like
the bike.
There are some WAY nicer bikes out there.
New Moto-Guzzi? BMW? Ural?
I guess its just personal taste but at least i dont call Harleys "Hogwash"
Oh my.....
What did i start....
I love all bikes!!!!! (except Jud's)

Part of the reason I bought a new Ural in 03.5', was the claim they offered a parts and labor warranty. What a joke. I'm sure others had better exp with IMWA then I had but let's just say BTDT and never again Jake Reddick Fla. I have heard Laser Pro Duro pipes in a wooded setting and actually thought it sounded pretty good. Not loud, but throaty for sure.
But "I" cannot justify that much cash for a bike pipe..
Have heard Tractor Supply has a slip for a tractor or something that will fit the KLR without alot of mods.
Heck I had a Flowmaster muffler("installed") on a Camaro that cost me less than most aftermarket pipes.
I do agree with a more robust horn however.

I'll have to find the link, but I saw some dyno results that showed the Tractor Supply muffler actually LOST horsepower vs. stock.

In my not so humble opinion loud pipes dont save lives. It is an invalid assumption made by people trying to excuse having to run open pipes to make their antiquated design motorcycles get out of their own way. There, that should fire some people up!
Simple fact is that the dipsh1t in a honda with her radio up, a coffee in one hand, her lipstick in the other hand and texting her boyfreind with the other hand is never going to pay attention to where the noise is coming from. It simply will not register with them. More over there are those who become distracted by the baby crying or their coffee cup spilling on them..., Not really their fault but they are not paying attention to the noise outside.
The only real solution is to not be there when they come. I have always taught my students that it is THEIR responsibility to know what the drivers around them are doing and not be in their way when they do stupid things. That they will do stupid things is a forgone conclusion.
Loads of those students have come back to me saying they would have been wacked if they were not thinking like that. Knowing what the drivers are going to do means paying attention. You cant do that if you can not hear things around you..
A separate part of that knowledge comes from being able to see their reactions, the slight head twist instead of turning to look, the head turning right indicating they are turning left across traffic.... KLRs are tall enough that you can see into the SUVs and cars better... Cruisers are low and allow less visibility. Sort of like Natural selection favoring the KLRistas, but we knew that already.
OK, All you HD guys fire away. I expect it but it had to be said just the same
