Ian,
I'll bet your paycheck it's the spring. When it breaks the pawl can't
touch the shift drum parts and shifting goes away.
Probably take you about 1 1/2 hours to fix it and you only need to remove
the right side cover.
I think if a guy was on the road a coil spring could be substituted for
the band ("U") type spring and if a coil spring wasn't available a light
piece of rubber tubing could be slipped in the area.
