The reason the stock piece is plastic is in case the cable gets pulled hard enough to break something it will be this piece instead of the carb body. You pays your money and you takes your chances. Fred, Nothing personal, but I can't believe that. If anything, the enricher lever would break. More likely it's because it's cheaper to make. My 2 cents. The metal where this cap-starter plunger is located is very thin and very brittle. One good bump and you will be buying a new carb. Like I said, you pays your money and you takes your chances. Kawasaki uses cheaper parts? Surely you jest. $27.50??? LOL... No thanks. In 14 years of KLR ownership, I broke the plastic one on all of my bikes (4) and have had no problem leaving them in place. As long as the the piece isn't FUBAR and the nut still threads into the carb, you're good to go. Ya, but: It also looks way more trick that the OEM plastic part. Like anyone is actually going to crawl down there to even be able to see it. I agree this part will function normally even when the cable retainer clips are broken. These clips are what also hold on the seal. The problem I have seen is if the seal doesn t do it s job, there will be a chance of moisture getting into where the plunger and spring is. The spring eventually will rust and break leaving the choke on all the time. I recently bought two of the plastic pieces from the local dealer at discount: $9.95 ea. I also found and old metal open-end wrench and my buddy heated it up and we bent it a little. I've since ground down the jaws so I can get the wrench down in around the carb to more easily remove the enricher cable / plastic piece before snapping off another "Cap-Starter Plung" at what could have been $20 ea. Would bet more folks break this piece removing or installing the carb than anytime else. It's one of the more frustrating things for me to hook up after giving the carb it's annual dusch. Like your idea Don but I've got so darn many "special tools" it's hard to find the one I need at the time.
