I took Jim (professor) advice and filed a claim with www.nhtsa.dot.gov> about the problems with the dookicky & spring. Maybe now KHI will have to recall all thies time bombs I had two blow up on me. If you ever had a problem with your doohicky or spring file a claim the more the better it's about time KHI gets their act together

Yes, there was noise, but when I opened it up it wasn't broken. It
was a loose chain. So I made it nice and tight and BLAM! Don't over
tighten the tensioner.

Yesterday I replaced the doohicky on my A17. The bike has 6000 miles.
The doohicky was broken, and the broken off part that should go
around the shaft was gone. I looked in the engine for it with a light
and a magnet but could not find a trace. I installed the new spring
and doohickey and put it all back together, but I'm concerned about the
whereabouts of the missing pieces. Any suggestions from others with
similar experiences would be appreciated.
Mark's procedure from the files provided great guidance. Thanks to all
of you that have spread the word on the doohicky problem, and
contributed the the replacement parts and procedures.

I found my broken Doohickey piece on the oil screen,
located under the clutch basket on the right side of
the motor.

You will likely want to invest in the magnetic drain plug that Dual Star
and others have on offer. As previously mentioned, the oil screen is a
good place to look as well.

Danny,
As others have noted, it's often on the screen for the oil pump
pickup. There's been a couple of cases of screens reported missing,
and IIRC, 1 engine was lunched when the broken piece was in one of
those engines.
I've also found them waaay back in the back of the sump, towards the
transmission. I found a magnet at True Value, with an aluinum bendable
wire between the handle and magnet. After A LOT of fishing, sometimes
they are found back there.
All the best,
Mike

After receiving 10 billion emails on this potential flaw in the bike I
feel like a hypocondriac. This among other things makes me want to
sell my KLR650 and buy a Honda.
Will there be any messages posted about how much they love thier KLR's
and how reliable they are????
