Have a brand new seat and muffler removed from my new 09 KLR for sale. Seat $125 muffler $200 if anyone is interested.

I would say that unless there is a compelling reason to split the cases, it might be better to leave them alone. Some say an engine is only as good as the last build, and others say once the cases have been split the transmission will never be the same. You have to make sure the end play/lash (can't think of the correct term) on all the transmission shafts is right on. Lots of little shims to get in exactly the right place. But on the other hand I'm sure many KLR cases have been split and put back together successfully. They are not complicated engines. If it were mine I'd inspect the sump as much as possible and not spilt the cases unless there was a very good reason to. You can get a telescopic magnet down into the sump and see if any metal bits come out, inspect the drain plug if it was magnetized, turn the crank over by hand and feel for bad bearings etc.
