You are correct, of course. I'm riding CA freeways and riding slower than before, but still above 5K for long periods. I expected it. But not as much as I saw (bottom of the glass after ~400 Miles).

Extended periods of riding at 5K+rpms will result in higher oil consumption in nearly all KLR650's, regardless of the gearing.
Don't be surprised if riding at 6K+rpms will probably use 1 Qt in 500 miles.
My son and I both used a ratio equivalent of 13/43 this summer for 2000 dual-sport miles without ever seeing the oil line in the window (true 2.5L added with filter change). Most of that riding was done at

A lot of people refer to crude based oils as "dinosaur based", so I suspect
advanced age has something to do with it.

Maybe I am younger but not by much. The dinos were in the ground when I was a kid but they were still shallow enough that dad made me go dig for the oil with a shovel, it was only a few feet down.
It was fresh enough that you could easily refine it yourself in the tub too. Didnt really matter though since the VW bus would run on anything
