Howdy List,
I bent a rim on a pothole. No flat tire. The rim is just visibly bent. I did ride ~500 miles on road after I bent it. Would I want to replace the rim? What are your thoughts? Can it be whumped back into round with a rubber mallet and some rim-shaped backing/anvil? I'm curious what you think the best (read "cheap") course of action would be....
Thanks,

#ygrps-yiv-1594810705 p {margin:0;}I've never had any luck straightening them. A brand new Takasago rim goes for about $100.00 for the front, or you can call around to get a used one. I picked up a pair of used rims from Eagle Mike for a reasonable price.
Lacing and truing them is a pain, but you can do it if you take your time. If you're in SoCal, I can help you do it.

bent rim
Jim,
Somebody just posted a couple days ago about a bike he is parting out, head back through a few older posts.
Highly doubt you will be able to straighten a bent rim, might be able to whack it kinda close with a mallet.
Riding down a freshly paved road the other day I noticed my front end really not right, my D606 front is worn pretty bad, at 35~40 can feel the front end hopping up and down due to the worn tire.

If you don't feel any undue vibration, and the dent isn't big enough that it leaves a gap between the rim and the bead of the tire, then just ride it. (That's the cheapest solution right there!)
I've "straightened" a KLR rim that had a dent that left such a gap that dirt and other debris could enter the tire. I used heat, a BFH, and a slew of sailor-approved vocabulary. If you've already determined that the rim is unusable, you've really got nothing to lose by trying to straighten it out. Others will probably pipe up with some safety advice like using heat on the aluminum rim will ensure it's untimely demise - and they're probably right, but it wasn't my experience.
