valve shims?

Post by mark ward » Mon Aug 23, 2010 3:54 pm

Hey getting ready to pull the shims, (1st timer) are they ALL interchange-able? If 1 is the size I need to replace in anouther spot can i use it? I have cover off & checked gaps, but have not pulled cams yet. it looks, like I NEED, a crows foot, to re-torque. (?) Mark (W. Mi.)

valve shims?

The shims are interchangeable between valves. REMEMBER, the torque for the cam caps is in the inch-pound range; my manual is at work so i'm sure someone will jump in with the right torque value. Over-torquing them would be a bad thing.

Attachments : Only about 50 spots left!  Don’t delay!  (Limit 100 participants)

If you are a part of Team Orange then this is a "must attend" event designed especially for you & your ride!  If you don't ride a KTM then that's fine too!  KTM is the major sponsor of this event but it's really about getting into the back-country and enjoying the trails, right?

This is an AMA 2010 KTM National Dual Sport Trail Riding Series event held at the gateway to Yosemite National Park and open to any make or model of street legal motorcycle.  This two day, GPS based, self-guided event includes scenic & historic destinations in and around Yosemite National Park and the Stanislaus National Forest. Using paved and unpaved roads with options of “hard” & “easy” splits, you’ll have approximately 100 miles of fun each day!  Dirt routes are approximately 80% dirt.  Easy routes are 2-track gravel and fire roads appropriate for large “Adventure Bikes” and beginners.

KTM is giving away an EXC530 to one lucky AMA Member participating in this year’s series.  AMA member participating in this event are entered in the drawing!

Event operated under permit from the Stanislaus National Forest.

~~~Mark, I did not find the need to use a crow's foot when setting final torque. I used 1/4" drive sockets and extensions, just be sure to shove towelling in your cam chain well so nothing falls into the abyss, like a socket that can and will fall off your extension=:-) Another trick I used before removing cams was to mark each cam and the chain by drawing a mark across the chain and cam (to re-align) using a permanent marker (I like and use the big Sharpie) I used a good degreaser where I made my marks. One mark on each cam (outboard side, and to the corresponding link of chain) Two other things when doing this. You don't have to completely remove the cam holder bolts on the cam holders closest to the cam chain gear. What I did was to back those bolts out, then re-thread them back into their holes 2 complete turns. Now you'll also have to remove the cam chain tensioner when doing this so you have enough chain slack but by not removing the cam holders on each camshaft closest to the chain gear, you will have enough cam chain slack to lift the cam high emough to R&R the left outboard shims...and the mark you made will keep a good referrence point when re-assembling i would suggest buying a new cam tensioner gasket...in the evernt your oem gasket rips, like mine did. Buy this gasket ahead of time, or at the same time you buy the shims you need the only other piece of advice (tip) I can think of offering here...when re-assembling the cams (fastening the bolts and cam holders) Make sure the cam is seated properly before threading the cam holder bolts back in. you do not want any mis-fits here. Take your time and make sure the cam holders are seating properly bwefore threading in the bolts and most certainly before final torque. Check and recheck
