Went on a nine day ride up to Southern Washington (family reunion) from SoCal, and hit a deer just north of Happy Camp above the Klamath river.  I saw it crouching in the grass alongside the road as I approached at about 45 mph.  At the last second it sprang directly into my path.  I had a split second to try to avoid it from a direct hit by turning left away from it.  Glad I didn’t have time to hit the foot brake, or it may have caused my leg a lot more damage if it didn’t freely swing off the peg from the impact.  Its head caught my right fairing, and broke it.  It then hit me in the shin.  It knocked my foot off the peg so hard that I kicked the right side panel  with my heel and broke the plastic insert that attaches the panel to the frame.  I didn’t crash, but was kind of shocked that I had actually hit the deer.  I have had a few close encounters but always had enough time to avoid them.  I had gear on with shin padding or might have broken my leg.  I think it saved the deer’s life as well, as he ran off back into the brush.  It’s kind of funny, but as soon as the Deer leaped into my path I screamed at it “No you didn’t!”.  Anyway, it had no impact on an otherwise beautiful ride and trip, except for the flat in the middle of the Redwoods, in the area where all the fossilized hippies go to fade away.

Dumb ass animals. What time of day was it? I have my share of times wondering what they were going to do wiggling their stupid ears at the side of the road. I was leaving Chama on the way back from Moab one year at just before dawn when I saw a downed sport bike, dead deer and cops talking to a witness but no sign of the rider. Next year their was a cross on the side of the road there. Two more deer were at the side of the road wiggling their ears at me but didn't leap on the way to Taos that morning. You wre lucky. If I remember correctly, Russell's bike is a 1998. Don't think he has full coverage on that beast, as it's already had the rear subframe bolts broken, been set on fire and been thrown down a hill, and he still wouldn't trade it for a Coupe De Ville. Quick, wash it before the deer mafia comes looking for you!

Wow! Glad you escaped relatively unscathed, Russell! Did it knock your suitcase of the luggage rack? :-) Best Stu PS Cal Posse!

Glad you're OK Russell.  You've got a great story to tell for years to come.  That's a good haul on the KLR.  If you'd been on something else that deer encounter might not have turned out so nice.  Do you have any brake upgrades on your bike.  I know if my 02 had stock binders stopping in anything short of a country mile was impossible.  Something all KLR riders should consider.  BTW - you had that flat in the "best" place possible so long as you had repair stuff along.  Those redwoods are some of the most beautiful in the world.  The hippies are mostly cool too just don't mess with their crops.  Glad ya made it home alright!

Glad you are alright. Had a rider in my area hit and kill a deer 6-20-10 and ride away. Bike still runs great. Bent Nerf bars some broken plastic, scrape the deer sh%t off the seat. Had his video camera on at the time, although I missed when it was posted. http://www.klr650.net/forums/showthread.php?t=81467 I don't know if you have to be registered but it could be worth a look. I have gotten many with a car/pu I don't want to get one with the bike.

Mike, On my 2005, I had to jumper the wires together when I removed my sidestand switch. Mike Martin, Louisville, KY From: jmtreeful To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Question: Is unplugging the side stand switch enough to disable it without side effects? (2007 model) Mike in Tucson
