~~~I had an ST 1100 Honda I thought never used oil, until I rode it day after day doing slab to get out west and by the time i hit WY I had to use a litter better than a pint to bring it back up to the correct level Same with my 08' KLR, ridden locally she doesn't use a drop of oil; but on a road trip from here to B'ham AL back in 08' doing a lot of slab and maintaining pert near indicated 80 MPH for a lot of those miles, by the time the odo hit 800 miles on the return leg of that trip, I had to use better than a pint of oil to get it back up to the top of the sight glass A single cylinder motor like our KLR's turning 5 K + RPM's hour after hour will use some oil to help cool the motor. And it's also documented the factory configuration for the oil breather into the air box will help *relieve* the crankcase of oil Yes, and there are those that own and ride an 02' KLR (or some other year) that doesn't use a drop of oil and gets ridden real hard (harder than I've out lined) and put away wet I had a Honda Silverwing scooter (600 cc's parallel twin) I rode to Denver and back in 04' that only used an ounce or two of oil the whole time, and I rode that one at 80 MPH indicated using slab all the way there and back, w/aux fuel so I was on the throttle for better than 250 miles at a crack and 500 miles was my lowest mile ridden day. Did a couple 800 mile days on that trip But getting back to riding a single cylinder motor at slab speeds all day or most of it, you better be checking your oil level when you stop for fuel, and that's where a lot of the horror stories of 08 KLR motors grenading themselves came from, errant owners not checking their motor oil level, but there were some whose motor would eat even more copious amounts of oil and it wasn't there fault but the ones that used better than a quart between fuel tank fill ups, those were far and few between...but even if one used a pint of oil a tankfull (every 250 miles), that's too much oil consumption AFAIC Jake Reddick Fla.
