inexpensive solution for no centerstand?

I hate not having a centerstand on my '09, but don't want to spend $140 plus on an aftermarket one. Does anyone have a good, inexpensive workaround solution? Aerostich has an external jack stand, but it won't work on KLRs. Thanks, John

Attachments :Do you just want something to get the wheel off the ground to lube the chain or clean the rim? This is not a good idea for much of anything else. But, on previous dual sport bikes without a center stand, I carried a length of PVC pipe about 1.5 - 2 in. in diameter. The pipe was cut with a slight notch in one end to help it stay on the swing arm end & the overall length was just barely long enough to hold the wheel off the ground when placed vertically between the swingarm and the ground. To use it, I tied off the front brake lever with a bandana or whatever I had handy to keep the bike from rolling. Next, I *carefully* pushed up on the rear rack and leaned the bike left on the kickstand so I could position the pipe under the swingarm. Again, for anything more than cleaning the wheel or lubing the chain, you'd want something more stable. But, this cheap {free?} "stand" served well. I found the attached old picture of a Transalp with the "stand" visible on the rear pack. eddie

I bought one of these and they work great....There handmade from aluminum and work to raise the front or reat tire...just pivot the bike up on the kickstand and place it under the rear brake pedal bracket to raise the rear tire, or place it into one of the skidplate holes to raise up the front tire....I have even used it to change out flats on the trail....   HTH.... ~~~I modded this- http://www.flickr.com/photos/26137108@N04/4611068280/ from an old pair of aluminum crutches I had lying around in the garage. Always thought keeping a set of crutches handy was bad ju-ju so I didn't mind hacking up one of the two crutches in the least. her's another pic with this ho0mebrewed jack in action- http://www.flickr.com/photos/26137108@N04/4611071596/ FWIW I've never had to try this jack out on the road and hope I never have to. You'd wanna place something hard and flat under the jack if you're in loose sand, and it isn't easy to get the KLR up on this jack by yourself if trying to get the front up you know what you might want to try? Try pulling the front and rear wheel off your KLR in your yard sometime. Let me know how it goes, I haven't done that yet=:-)...but if you think about it, you may be faced with a flat to repair on this bike w/o any way to get the wheel off with the aid of someway, keeping the bike vertical You could always look for a stump to set er up on (belly pan) to get the wheels off the ground...and I have thought that a come along (small enough to fit somewhere on the bike) would be good to have...maybe a pair of pulleys and some line and tie off the end with the flat and hoist it up. Wouldn't work in the desert w/o a tree limb handy=:-( Really though, and I'm asking the enlighted ones here...what would happen if you laid the KLR over on one side to pull a wheel and leaving it on the side while you fixed your tube or installed a new tube? I'd think if you laid er over on the right side the battery vent tube wouldn't spill a drop...maybe some fuel would come out of a vent (tank, carb)? You could close the fuel petcock and run the carb dry before laying her over. Again, I'm just asking...haven't done this myself, yet=:-) Jake Reddick Fla. I may not agree with what you say... but if you say it with fewer words I'll try harder... http://www.shakinjake.blogspot.com/

Try looking up the "Porklift". Worth about $40 from somewhere in NY. If you order it, specify that it is for a KLR. I bought one about a year ago, but only used it once, so I am no expert. DC

Depends how the full the gas tank is. You can lose some fuel through the gas cap vent system at higher levels. My Givi trunk works perfectly to hold up either end of the bike for tire work. And I have a dual star jack stand similar to what was being sold on advrider for trailside repairs when I'm not rocking the Givi. da Vermonster

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/DSN_KLR650/files/KLR-stands/ Kawasaki understood the need for a center stand and made sure the KLR had exactly what it needed where ever they are. While my panniers have been under the bash plate once or twice to hold it up and have on occasion ridden it over a downed tree to balance on the bash plate I have the proper tool in the panniers for this. In fact I have them scattered around the garage as well. In fact Kawasaki has made sure they are scattered across most of the planet albeit cleverly disquised. I use a piece of wood somewhere between 1 and 3 inches square although a 12 inch log works. I forget what rough length I cut mine but varying length ones are laying about in the woods. that is good since what length is best depends on the terrain and where you were when you shut off the bike. If you are doing more than cleaning the chain then prop several of them against the bike on both sides to be sure it stays there.

1. Spend $65 on an atv lift. This will take care of all at-home chores such as tire mounting, chain lubing and the like. 2. The only thing remaining is to fix a flat on the road. A quick-jack is cheap and easy to carry. It may also be overkill. The world is full of objects that may serve the same purpose: hammer handles, rocks, 2x4s, stumps. Givi makes a number of fine products; I prefer their E21 saddlebag.

#ygrps-yiv-1197800276 p {margin:0;}I think certain year-ranges differ in this respect.  On my '09, the thicker side goes toward the engine, or you can put a spacer washer on the inside and install it the other way around, AFAIK. My stock 15T is thick on both sides and has a rubber shroud around it.  I held them next to each other with the teeth lined up and decided that the thick side should go toward the case.  It wouldn't snug up right without the included spacer on the outside.  The chain alignment looks fine and I've noticed no funny wear. -Jeff Khoury

Without going into a long story does the larger thicker side (extension) go against the engine OR the the smaller thinner side (extension)? Some will say that the stamped number goes on the outside but in my case the 14 tooth is stamped on the thin side while the 15 tooth is stamped on the thick side. Thank you. Brian
