two inner tubes per tire?

Hello, Has anyone experimented with installing two inner tubes in each tire as a way to avoid being stranded with a flat tire (or to avoid having to make a field repair)? I realize I would need an extra valve stem hole in the rim, and if one tube went flat I would be at half pressure, but I could either quickly inflat the working tube, or limp to a gas station for air. I ended up with a front flat tire yesterday on the way home from work and it was not a fun experience, while waiting for a ride I ended up getting caught in a rain storm. I usually ride alone on trips and it would be nice to have a fast and easy way to recover from a flat tire, plus the extra safty of not losing all tire air pressure while at highways speeds. Just a thought, thanks... Dennis...

Dennis, What makes you think that getting a flat would ONLY flatten ONE of your 2 tubes...? Ed

Interesting idea but I would be more concerned about the extra unsprung weight. It may work out to not be an issue and the idea of being able to simply pump up the other tube and carry on with the rally has some real merrit. We spent a pretty good mount of time in the woods last year with a few peoples flat tires at the PB300. It sounds like the kind of thing someone is going to have to try for a while before we know if it will work out or not.

tail trunk

I have the smaller one. It was given to me or I wouldn't have it. It's too small to be really useful unless you're only carrying small stuff. I can't even put my helmet in it. It does seal pretty well though. Never had any problems with leaking. Mine has the plastic mounting plate too and I was always worried about the mounting plate breaking though. The way it would bounce around on gravel roads, I was sure I was going to reach back sometime and it would be gone! But it's no problem now because I put Mermites on! I did a ride report a couple years ago on another discussion board. It has some shots of the bike with the trunk on. Here's the link. http://klrworld.com/forums/index.php/topic,6928.msg70628.html#msg70628

If you're doing a rally that is mostly offroad you should probably use a mousse. I think Michelin makes them. They don't handle the heat of high speed driving well though.  Personally I preemptively slime my tubes and carry a patch kit, compressor and tire irons with me.  -Jeff Khoury

I am a big guy. I dont think a mousse could carry me, although I think they are cute, little whiskers and all.   I carry irons, patches...  I haven't tried Slime yet but I do run HD tubes. IRC and Kenda make them. I think Moose racing does too. They are the best extra 5 bucks you can spend when you are doing tires IMHO From: Jeff Khoury [mailto:jeff@...] Sent: Thursday, July 22, 2010 11:38 AM To: Eckert, Christopher (Infrastructure Solutions Dept.) Do inner tubes come in different widths like with bicycles? I know you wouldn't want to cram two heavy duty tubes in one tire. You would ride with 1 inflated or both inflated? Jeffrey #3
