better visibility from the stock klr headlamp

Post by tlz4u » Sun Jul 18, 2010 4:21 pm

I've been seeing a number of posts concerning the poor light output of the stock KLR headlamp, and I'm pretty sure that it's NOT the fault of the headlamp or reflector itself. The very small wires that the factory uses to power the bulb are the real culprit. They create too much voltage drop in the  current getting to the bulb.      To test this theory, I installed a headlight modulator that incorporates (internally) a solid state relay, on my '02 KLR.  The headlamp and reflector are as supplied from  the factory, with a 55-60 watt H-4 lamp.  The modulater installed is part no. AloSR15H4, and is available from a company called "Comagination". It is very easy to install.  Here's a link to the company.   http://www.comagination.com/relay-kit-h ... ulator.htm      The results are instantaneous, and almost unbelievable. I am no longer hesitant to ride the KLR at night, and the modulator would be very easy to transfer to another bike should I decide to sell.      Note: The other night, I performed an experiment. Using an electronic stop watch, I timed how long it was before an object became visible (and identifiable)  until I reached it. I was travelling at 55 mph on a very dark two lane road through a dense forested area. I was astonished to find that I consistantly had 5 seconds after I identified an object, before I reached it. With the output of the stock set up, I was overdriving my headlight at less than 40 MPH!      To say I am pleased with this product, and the service from the company, would be an understatement. The increased light output at night, AND the increased visibility provided by the modulator during the day, elevates this product to just behind replacing the "doohickey" as a must do modification for stock KLR's IMHO.
