08 vs 07 ?

I'am going to buy a KLR 650. My question is the new model the best one to get or stick with the tried and true 07 and previous. The upgrades on the 08 look nice but what about all that plastic? The groups opinions would be appreciated. Thanks Brad

Plan on riding it as a offroad bike at all ? If you plan on being a road rider I might go for the newer model, if you plan on riding it and perhaps dropping it/wiping out/taking a digger/having fun off pavement I myself would go with the older model the plastics on the new ones just looks too breakable to me. Its your choice. The newer models have some things upgraded.. honestly the old works just fine for me. Dooden A15 Green Ape

If your lookin at an 08 remember they did have some problems with oil comsumption.  I also am kinda ole school.  I have an 07 and love it.  I bought it for both on and off road.  I do think the newer one run the pavement better probably but I have no complaints with my O7.   Gary Souderton, Pa. I have dropped my '07 LOTS of times (no wisecracks you guys).  I have dents in the gas tank that I have NO IDEA how they got there.  The new one will work just as well, I'm sure.  And it sure is pretty.  The new one is LOTS more shiny, for sure. The suspension and brakes are better out of the box on the 08. The 07 is cheaper going in. in the end they are all pretty much the same bike though. You should start with how much you have to spend and how many miles on a used bike is acceptable for you. Then see what falls in your range.

#ygrps-yiv-1925606280 p {margin:0;}Nah, they hold up fine: 40MPH collision into the back of a car after being sideswiped.  The bedliner paint job cracked off, but the fender was fine: http://bit.ly/cCoEB4 Same bike, earlier wreck - after bouncing off an industrial truck and ending up under a van.  Fender's fine.  Cowling is not. http://bit.ly/cFOZQu -Jeff Khoury

#ygrps-yiv-195954605 p {margin:0;}As to the plastics fading: The old KLRs had polypropylene (e.g. Tupperware) plastics all over.  Poly is a soft, flexible plastic made to bend rather than break, but UV takes its toll. The new KLRs have polypropylene fenders (front and rear), side panels and handguards.  They will fade at approximately the same rate as the old ones.  The radiator shrouds and upper cowling are ABS plastic which is harder, shinier and lasts longer in the sun.  It also will crack easier than poly.  Most sportbike fairings are ABS. -Jeff Khoury

Looks good BUT, it will fall apart, the fender will snap.   Anyone, personaly KNOW,  of lots of breakage??   What I'm wondering, do'es the plastic fade as fast? Mark (W. My question is the new model the best one to get or stick with the tried and true 07 and previous. The upgrades on the 08 look nice but what about all that plastic? The groups opinions would be appreciated. Thanks Brad
