I'm currently working at a large motorcycle dealership for the summer. Last week a technician quit because the only tires he could get to mount on a customer's bike were about 18 months old. At the Saturday service section meeting with the Service Manager, General Manager and one of the owners the tire age issue was discussed. A major tire manufacturer was contacted about tire age. This dealership has some pull based on the volume of tires bought and changed each year. The manufacturer said tires were good for 6 years from the date on the tire. None of the 20 or so people in the meeting had ever seen a tire failure based just on age. Discussion of how this dealership would handle tire age continued and it was decided that mounting tires that were 18 months old was reasonable for most of our customers. Many put on lots of miles each year and would have the tire again replaced within a year or so. That might allow the tire to get to 3 years old. It was brought up that a customer that didn't ride much might not get full use from the tire before it was 6 years old. But it's also thought those are the same customers that won't be doing long, high speed runs or aggressive riding in twisties. I personally have tires on a road bike that are now about 14 years old. The rubber is still in good condition on the outside. I don't ride that bike much if ever so the age isn't critical for me. I would probably change them if I decided to take that bike on a long trip. But for local riding in usually dry conditions those tires still work fine. As a side note... I've heard that some motocross riders throw their tires on a roof for a few months to help them age in the sun and weather. It makes the rubber a bit harder and they can get more "bite" with the "aged" tires. My guess is if you mounted the K270s with a build date of late 2009 you'd have them worn out before they were 3 years old. I don't know that I'd raise a stink about tires I bought for a really really good price that were less than a year old. I'm not raising a stink about the age. I was expecting them to be 22 years old or something and am exited that they are brand new, less than 1 year old is as brand new as tires get after the distribution chain gets done with them. I have a pair of tires dated 1992 on Suzi-Q and they are working fine. The harder they get the better the MPG. -----Original Message----- From: Jeff Saline [mailto:salinej1@...] Sent: Tuesday, June 29, 2010 10:27 AM To: Eckert, Christopher (Infrastructure Solutions Dept.)
