clutch cables $$
Hey all last week We ran 1400 miles, 5states, and I broke my Clutch cable, but was at the corner near a fire dept., they let me use some tools and a 3/8 nut (need to send the .12cents lol) to make a new end to hold by the tranny. Then several miles later after checking with 6 stores on the phone, we came to "Morgan County Kawasaki" in Martinville. They were very helpfull!! calling a few other places to find a new cable for my 07, then finialy sold me an 03, for $20.48, (said it must be slightly differant) At first I thought I was being ripped off, a cable for 07 is $9.18, but after checking with the owner today, and calling with the FULL number not just the 54011- I found 85-03 (oem) cables cost more the Dbl. the 07. ($22.--$9.18) I can't see the differance but my local store confermed the price diff.. ANY ONE KNOW THE DIFFERANCE? And how common an Issue? I know some people that ALWAYS carry a spare clutch cable. (My 07 was only at 6800) My cruiser came with a spare, last owner said he always carries a spare. Mark (W.Mi.)

clutch cables $$
Attachments : It’s easy to carry a spare clutch cable. Just run it next to and parallel to the existing cable. Ensure that the pivot point at the lever end hangs DOWN so that rain runs off it rather than into the cable housing. You can secure the cable in place with zip ties. Carried in this position you can swap the cables in a minute or two. I purchased a new cable, installed it., then left the old cable in place for an spare. clutch cables $$

~~~~An OEM clutch cable failing at 6800 miles does seem odd. And if you serviced the cable at least once in it's lifetime, would seem odder still. I have serviced the clutch cable on my 08' (purchased new by me 11/07...12 K miles currently) several times in the last 30 months. What I do for service is to loosen at the lever and at the bottom enough to get the cable ends out then I use the cable luber tool (Motion Pro type) that works with aerosol lubricants and lube til it comes out the other end. Then I use grease at the lever end and also where the engine end terminates...even though the clutch cable ball end of the cable on my 08' is plastic lined (the cable barrel), and therefore shouldn't require grease. Old habits die hard=:-) I recall reading somewhere that with dual sports ridden often, it's a good idea to do this service each time it rains. To my way of thinking that's way over kill. Back when I started riding/owning motorcycles in 1975, and enduro bikes at that, everyone I knew was using a liquid graphite lubricant for cables...and our bikes didn't have hydraulic disc brakes so the brake cables got the graphite lube too, as well as the throttle cable(s) In the last 6 years I've owned close to a half dozen metal bodied manual shift scooters...still have three of them, all use cable shifting, all get cable maint. when I ride them (2 have sat idle for a couple years). Since they use cables for gear shifting, best to stay on top of the cable maint yet some of the newer cables for manual shift scooters are teflon lined and do not require cable lube between the inner and outer cables, like the metal on metal variety. Seems queer to me to not have to lube a cable so I purchase replacement cables that *require* lubrication I read John B's response to your post where John said he keeps a spare clutch cable zip tied in place to the one in use. That's good thinking and something all of us should do but I've not followed through on this bit of pre-planning. Jake Reddick Fla. tool tube full of water
Re: the tool tube that mysteriously lets water in. Empty the tube out completely. Gently lay the bike on it's side so the tube is pointed skyward. Fill it with water. Put the cap back on, stand the bike up and observe where it leaks out. Leaking around the bolt holes? Silicone around them from within and without may do the trick. Cap ends (threaded portion)? Plumbers's teflon tape on the threads should work. I'm guessing it's the bolt holes. A s you speculated, the front tire is flinging water up there and it may be seeping through around the bolts. Just a guess. Let us know what you find! =) eddie
