I've used stock, Avon Distanzia's and now using Michelin Anakee's. I like the Anakees best so far. The Avons started getting micro cracking then eventually cupping. I did get almost 12K miles outa them.
I've got 1500K outa the Anakees, no cracking, excellent cornering, excellent response in rain/wet roads, long rides where they heat up considerably and very good on gravel.
I'm 90% highway and primarily commute to work.

Using the collecetive wisdom, I pulled the wheels to change the 4,000 mile OEM tires to list reccomended Kenda 760 rear and Bridgestone 606 front. In the process of installing the rear, I find the sprocket side inner bearing to be binding. Outer sprocket side and brake side bearings are OK. Loading the wheel in the car for a trip to the dealer for service/warranty opinion. Called parts dept- bearing not in stock- the part number in my factory manual has been superseeded. This is both a request for info and a heads up to 09 owners.

If your bearing is truly trash, using your index finger against the inner race to feel how it turns, it will feel gritty and or notchy, indicating replacement is necessary
If you forgot to install the spacer/bushing...you would not be the first (it will fall out un-noticed). And if that is the situation, you need to find it and install it...or buy a replacement, if it's lost in the abyss

The bearing industry uses a standard numbering system.
So if you pull the bearing out and take it into any bearing shop (or decent
auto parts store) they can measure the ID, OD and thickness then give you
something that interchanges with your stock part. I don't know for sure but
I doubt that the bearing you need has changed part numbers since the KLR had
its make-over so the bearing numbers in the KLR FAQ :

bike.
I recently changed this bearing on my '02 KLR and my local NAPA had it in
stock, about $20 some dollars. KLR stock bearings have one sealed side and
one open side. Best to replace them with a bearing that is sealed both
sides. A bearing suffix of "-2RS" indicates two rubber seals, that is what
you want. I suspect your bearing failed due to contamination, likely water.

Thanks for the feedback. You referenced the Big C known problems page- The Big C number for prior to 08 for the inner hub bearing is 6003- the 09 part number is a 6003G, which the dealer parts dept said is superseded. It may be the bearing has been replaced with a sealed version to avoid the rubber debris from the hub interface getting into the bearing. Will follow up with the list after the dealer files the warranty report.

Did you use a cutoff wheel or recip saw (sic: sawzall) to open the box?
Do you use a center stand?
One of the other foot peg repairs that I have read/pictures etal precludes using a center stand after the repair as it widens the overall foot peg mounting points...at least without some serious modifications to the center stand attachment points.

I had the problem described, starving, bucking, top speed of 60mph at temps of 90F, cough, followed by the petcock gasket failure. Not immediately, but it happened. Oddly, the bucking was on the 01 and the petcock failure happened on the 98.?!>?!.
How do you suppose those two KLR's did THAT!
Thats what you get for letting a green bike and a blue bike do 'sleep-overs' unchaperoned in the parsonage garage.

Further inspection with the service department at the dealer- there is grit in the bearing- not water- rubber from the mating surfaces in the sprocket hub interface. More to follow....

I heavily advise you change that .98-$1.25 rim strip AT LEAST every 5 tire changes...cough. hack. fuss.
Really--at least every other tire change, if not EVERY change. Examine the strip with a magnifying glass; pull on it and see if you can see some stress marks in the rubber
I would imagine some of those folks would/might buy a $6 beer at the ball park and then cheat on a duct-tape rim strip. They would also 'hope' they don't rub a hole in the tube on a dark and stormy night.
Duck tape is for McGivering;
timely parts replacement are for the rest of us that hate to walk or push our pigs. You have to walk or push that pig very far and it will make you a beliver in a strong maintenace ethic.
It's your pig. Part-it or tape to your hearts desire. I've replaced parts in the garage; I've been stranded because things I should have been watching closer, come unglued. sigh.
The garage is much better...fewer bears and mosquitoes as well.

Did your bike have the 'improved' brake billet that the rear brake is attached to when all this broke?
For anyone new on the list
Dual Star has one, as well as Eagle Mike.
Fred could tell us if he has one as well.
The purveyor of Dual Star suggested, "if you only buy ONE farkle, please buy the brake billet." Several here on the list through the years have made the same ride as Jeffery--some losing their footpeg as well; it is also a good reason NOT to remove your rear foot pegs--should you loose a foot peg to neglect or fate, you will still have a place to put your foot besides the clutch case.
The brake billet is a known failure point, especially for those who travel near rocks, curbs, ditches, ruts, stumps and roots. Not really a necessary farkle for those who park, wash and admire.
Is the 'improved' billet that much better?
Well, I got two of them, never broke either of them, yet. It is not for lack of trying or exposure....
