My stock rear must have gone about 4000 miles, because when I bought the bike it had about that many miles and a fresh K270 on it. 10,000 miles later it was squared-off and nearly bald but still had visible tread at the center all the way around. It was just about the end of the riding so I put a few ice screws in the next-to-outermost row of knobs and got in a few icy rides over the winter until I replaced the tire in the spring. I repeated for the next couple of years, and got 29,000 miles out of three K270s. I might have changed them at 6 or 7k without feeling I was throwing away a lot of good tire, but I was pleased to get a whole season out of them. I think the K270 is a fine rear tire for the KLR. I prefer a D606 or a no-longer-available Cheng Shin 858 on the front. Whatever you do, get rid of the stock front tire, even if it still appears to have a bit of life. I learned the hard way that it would just as soon tip you over as climb its way out of a rut. Even a K270 on the front is a vast improvement.
