I can't ride below 3,500 rpm in most gears unless it's a no load condition like flat or downhill. And that includes trying to go 40 in 5th. That's just too slow for that gear. You don't need to be in high gear all the time. Select the gear that matches your speed and conditions. You might find 4th or even 3rd is better suited for your riding at that speed. My KLR likes 4,000-5,500 rpm the best. If you try to accelerate and the engine is bucking downshift and try again. When you get up to speed/engine rpm upshift and do it again. Best,

This is nothing new. It has always behaved this way. But after riding other bikes on the same roads and not having this problem, I'm begining to wander if something is wrong with the KLR.
Is it normal not to be able to drive 40mph in high gear on a KLR650? Craig Kahler
