Since there is minimal movement on the forum, let's start a brand new "oil thread" I'll start.. I use 15 W 40 diesel motor oil in my Lime Ricky and have been for 3 years. Since I haven't had any clutch slippage or other funky stuff happening to my innards and I get the stuff real cheep in 5 gal buckets am I doing something I shouldn't be?. I still use paper OEM filters too..are the stainless steel K&N type worth the added cost over the OEM? I also have a magnetic drain plug that seems to catch the little normal wear Items...but I heard I shouldn't reuse the washer. I flip it and torque it on, no seepage so that's a good thing right or not? Doo Hickey I still haven't got around to doing that either. Is that really necessary? I've released the tension at every oil charge and seems to work as indicated in the manual. No strange noises either. Lastly has anyone else other than Zackariah Mully (off KLR FAQ)ever done inverted forks? I really would like to do this mod as I have a complete front end off a DR250, got it free and would like the off road abilities of a dirt bike type setup?
Thanks for taking the time to assist me.

let's start an oil thread
Sounds like decent oil, changed often is doing the trick. I compared Fram, K&N and OEM filters and the Fram seemed to have the most coarse (ragged) paper. The K&N filter medium looks good. But, the filter's a mm or three shorter than the Kaw. filter and the rubber grommets don't seem to fit onto the relieve tube as snugly as I'd like. So, I saved the grommets from a couple of Frams I got cheaply and put them in the K&Ns. Me? I've never replaced a bike's oil plug washer. Ever. In 21 years, I've never had one leak, either. eddie

<><><><><> <><><><><> Tom, First off let's not start an oil thread. : ) I suggest you consider a NAPA soft washer for the drain plug. Part number is 704-1371 . This soft washer will seal with less torque which might just help keep the case drain plug threads from being stripped by folks reusing the metal crush washer and overtorquing the plug. : ) It's reusable and really works. Mine has been in use for about 26,000 smiles without leaks or problems. I haven't touched it since yesterday. Doo or don't doo the doo. Your call. There are many documented failures but it's your bike so you decide what you'll doo. There might be more documented failures of the spring than the doo. I'll guess you are guessing the doo is working as designed. Unless you open the engine you'll never know for sure. Go to www.klr650.net and do a search for inverted forks or fork swap or something similar. It's not an uncommon swap using a variety of forks. Lots of hints and tips in those posts. Best,
