'oil 'weight' error - a problem ?

O.K. - here's one for all the 'experts' and long-time owners & riders . . . A few days ago I was doing my usual 'Spring Maintenance' - inspecting, checking, tightening, and changing all the fluids. The local 'supplies' place only had one quart of my 'flavor' of 10w40 - but offered me 'Royal Purple' which they did have. So I got 2 quarts. {NOTE: the weight lettering was 'Black-on-black' - outlined}. I had a part of a quart of my 'regular' for 'topping off'. After I finished and was cleaning up I noticed that ONE bottle was marked 10w30 !! It's got the full 2.6 quarts -definitely above the full mark and filling the 'sight glass'- so only maybe 40% is the 'lighter' oil. The question is this - given my present 'style' of riding -no dirt, no long distance high speed highway is this a potential problem ?? {NOTE: the bike is a 2003 'vintage' but in IMMACULATE condition - never ridded off-road, very well cared for - I have the paperwork 'history'} Regards & Thanks, Ron Magen Backyard Boatshop 2003 KLR650 {'New-to-me'} _______________________________________ No infections found in this outgoing message Scanned by iolo System Shield http://www.iolo.com

I got over the seat height and just picked up a 2007 KLR. I made an even swap. I gave up my 1999 Vulcan 750 for it. A great bike, which I hated to see go, but I had to make the switch. The KLR has 8600 miles with some broken plastic. It was lightly hit in a parking lot. The left radiator cover and the headlight fairing have to be replaced. Sometime. The doohickey also has to be done along with a new front tire. Blue Book value I came out ahead, but the Vulcan was immaculate. So I think an even trade. Tim

~~~Back in 02' I was riding east out of LA (city of angels) on I-10, summertime, burnin through the desert...got to Phoenix, my ST 1100 was way low on oil, ran red cap Mobil One in it (15/50 or is it 20/50? full syn) cause it was so easy to find except this stop in the gas station, I didn't feel like lookin for a Wal-Mart, all they had was dino oil, I bought what was handy (better than a quart, used most of 2 maybe), topped off the level and never looked back 30 weight's supposed upper temperture limit is 86 degrees f, 40 weight's is 104 degrees f...so you've theoretically lowered your oil's upper range temp limit somewhat. Depending on the temp conditions you are riding in, anything (use) under the most severe of conditions (WOT summertime desert), you should be fine. I've never destroyed a 4t motor from running too thin (weighwise) oil and ran 30 weight in a lot of stuff over the years. I'd say for what little bit of 30 weight you have in there, you have nothing to worry about under normal riding conditons this time of year. #ygrps-yiv-1763261004 p {margin:0;}I'm with Jake, I don't think it's a big deal.  I'd do any top-offs with 20-50 and call it good.  Some will freak out and tell you never to mix oil viscosities, but in my opinion it's not a biggie.  I've done it and trust me, they'll get well mixed in a KLR engine. As a side note, I run 20/50 in mine year round.  Engine runs quieter and I've had no ill effects. My logic is this:  The big problem with motorcycles and oil is viscosity breakdown due to the shearing effects on the long polymer chains caused by the transmission gears in a common sump system, such as the KLR.  After reading some oil articles and seeing how viscosity breaks down over time in MC engines, Starting with 20/50 gives me a longer period of time where the oil is more viscous, thus providing better coating and lubricity and allowing me to extend the time between oil changes. -Jeff Khoury
