Reason one worked and the other didn't is that the 1157 is dual filament.
If I'm not mistaken, it says on the bottom of the bulb "1157"
On the other hand, you probably could take the bulb to the local auto parts store, try every bulb in the place, maybe make one out of tinfoil and your microwave oven, and then call NASA, the CIA, and the DOT and see what they say. Jeez.
It's a frickin' 1157, less that $3 at any auto parts store on the planet.
