The easiest way to get to them is to use a ratchet, 6" extension and an allen socket.
You can use a regular allen wrench, but it's SO much easier with the right tools. Like many on the list, I carry an expanded tool kit, and it includes 3, 4 and 5mm allen sockets.

crate before I try it. It sounds easier than the two tires at once bit

Four Bolts:
The two on the dash, and two up under the fairing as you look in and
down from the tank.
The fairing (cowling) slides up and forward. Easy to change them after
the removal.

came out of mothballs

Been gone from the list for a year or so. Also hadn't ridden the KLR for a year or so. Now I need to reduce my inventory of motorcycles and it came down to the KLR or the KTM 450mxc going. Tuff call!!!!! The KTM is a POWERHOUSE and always a blast but as I remember back The KLR is just more fun. The test came this last weekend. I took the KLR to my cabin with the intent of riding it on all the trails the KTM goes on, man was I surprised how well it did. I plowed through manzanita bushes on rocky single track, hammered it on the fire roads and generally beat the snot out of it. Only change I made was Knobby tires. In pure KLR form it did everything well and nothing great. At the end of the day I was less tired than I usually am on the KTM. Maybe it is bacause I can actually sit on the KLR seat without bruising my rear. I think I am going to put the for sale sign on the KTM. Still bummed but I'll use the money to buy a 14 Tooth sprocket. It was fun watching the look on my friends faces when they couldn't loose me.
Moral of my rant: Forgot how much fun this bike is and also how capable it is.
