I bought a leftover new 2006 Honda in 2008. My mechanic recommended I change all the fluids and I knew why when I got the bike home.
It'd never been outside the dealership - covered and in a heated/air conditioned showroom. I took off the front master cylinder cover and there was probably a good spoonful of water atop the rubber seal inside.
At the shop where I hang out, they have a rule of thumb for customers and their brake/clutch fluids:
Check the color. Look like ginger ale? Okay. Weak Ice Tea? So-so. Root Beer? The fluid is dead. Change it before water contamination sets up expen$ive corrosion inside the system. It's cheap & easy to do yourself. Why not?
