Many moons ago, when I was younger and faster, I was with buds riding a way over loaded Hondar SL 350 (Not the first ADV tour bike, you have to recall the scrambler and tropy versions of brit twins), somewhere between Ensenada and Loreto. I was getting dark and we were chatting at a PEMEX Station after filling the ebasts and jerry cans with the fermented pig poop Pemex used to call gasoline.
The subject was do we stop and camp or press on at nigth? The Pemex operator recommended to camp. We asked why? touble ahead? He said very much so. You see it is very hard to see a black cow on a black nigh , on a black road...............it was good adivce to ANY bad road riding anywhere in the world.
SO we tooled down the road. found a carniceria, bought a case of Pacifico some steaks and had a good time not dying...

A black cow on a black night on a black road is not the worst hazard one can encounter.

I use the google Map on my iPhone all the time and rarely use my Garmin. It routes me to whatever I type into it even telling me the traffic situation and which streets are one way and which direction they go. I used it in Barcelona Spain at the airport typing in my hotel name. It led me right to it. It has only led me astray once on an address by a couple of blocks. I don't even have the special ap you can buy for the iPhone for GPS. I haven't mounted it to the bikes as not sure how vibration would affect it.

They do a good job of securing the gps and all sorts of other stuff, and with a gazillion bases, arms, etc they can be set up in all sorts of ways. One of the tremendous things you can do with a gps is share routes with other people. You will find route files for most trips, but some trips, especially if they have off-road sections, will use tracks instead of routes - not all gps can read tracks so give some thought to how you think you will use the device. Check out the ADVrider.com "Layin' down tracks" forum for a wealth of info on selecting a gps, finding a good deal, and routes from all over the world. I use a RAM cradle and mount on the handlebar. For power I have an always on power socket in the dash. I like always on as when I stop for gas, lunch, a break etc the GPS doesn't cycle to battery power.
