torsion or coil?

Post by marshall » Tue Mar 02, 2010 9:57 pm

I just got a '06 with 500 miles on it with original stock doo. I know the torsion spring set up has been out for a while the coil spring forever do we know which is the better? My '96's aftermarket stuff will be transfered to the '06 but I'm leaving the motor with the upgraded doo for the next owner. I'm sure anxious to be almost over a serious case of cabin fever, still a foot of snow on the ground here in lower Michigan. Thanks for the help Marshall E

torsion or coil?

Marshall, In my book the torsion spring is world's better than the coil/extension spring. I've installed a few of them and will be putting one in my KLR in the next few weeks. They became available about 3 months after I went in and replaced a long EagleMike extension spring with a shorter one. The longer one was loosing tension after about 16,000 smiles. Now it's about time to go back in and replace the shorter extension spring. The torsion spring will keep me from having to go back in ever again to mess with spring tension. BTW, nice score of an 05 with only 500 smiles. Don't forget to install a Thermo-Bob too and your bike will be set up well. torsion or coil?

Post by transalp 1 » Tue Mar 02, 2010 10:19 pm

The coil spring seems to suffer the most if the tension is lost: i.e. possibly falling into the engine and causing a mess. The torsion spring wraps around the idler adjustment shaft and would stay there even if it broke in half (very unlikely). Personally, I had the devil of a time getting the second end of the torsion spring in place on the doohickey. But, once there, it shall remain. eddie
