How's the body work? It should be in great demand, as it is much more attractive than any that came after it, save of course for the distinguished teal models of 1996-1999.

metzeler enduro 3 sahara (rear) tire review

Post by Jeff Khoury » Wed Feb 03, 2010 1:03 pm

Good Morning, As I promised when I installed it, I will put out my thoughts on this tire. Cut to the chase: I like it very much.  It has a fairly aggressive tractor-tire like tread pattern with large knobs spaced far apart.  This gives it excellent traction in sand, deep gravel and on the slab.  Wet traction on the street is outstanding and it performs exactly like the stock tire.  I ride aggressively on the street and frequently lean into peg-dragging territory when it's dry. The large knobs keep it from getting squirmy when leaned over.  The large spaces between the knobs ward off hydroplaning when it's raining heavily.  I did not ride the tire in mud, but the design of the tread leads me to believe that it would self-clean better than some.  I noticed no tearing around the base of the knobs even with all that street riding. The sidewall is very stiff.  Stiff enough that I was able to sit on the tire before I put it on the rim without deforming it.  The carcass is thick which is a bonus when riding in areas where thorny or rocky things live or if you need to run flat back to the truck to get a new tube. Mileage: I have a hair over 6,000 miles on the tire (mostly street, lots of lane-splitting and stop-n-go) and it looks like I could get another thousand out of it as there is about 1.5mm of tread left in the center. As a comparison, my stock tire was dead bald in the center at 5,800. There are only two downsides I can think of:  Price ($150.00) and Noise.  The tire was designed for GS-As and they sound like it! -Jeff Khoury

Tidings from West Michigan I got Lucky! So far I like My Metzler, I had about 2mm on my stock. Last fall when I called 8 bikeshops incloding the local Kawasaki, closet place to have ANY tire instock that fit the KLR650 was a K, dealer 70 miles away. well  for some reason I called the Local BMW 2 miles from My house, 1st answer No we don't stock any thing for the KLR, then asked to hold, .... we have a tire that a guy ordered for his BMW and rode only about 20 miles and returned it, It still has the teats on it, $75. mounted. as I said I GOT LUCKY!  (or was it a sample that I like, now I have to shell out the big $$...LOL)  RIDE ON!
