the ultimate klr finish
#ygrps-yiv-86180874 p {margin:0;}Good Morning,
As most of you know from reading my posts, I'm a big fan of DupliColor spray-on bedliner.
I ended up getting frustrated with the KLR's finish. Over time, the polypropylene plastics started looking crappy. My soft saddlebags put a hazy finish on the side panels, the rear fender was scratched and the front fender was starting to look bad as well. I recently "bit the bullet" and re-finished all the polypropylene plastics in bedliner. (front fender, hand guards, side panels, rear fender)
The secret to getting the stuff to stick and stay is to prep the surface properly. Sand with an orbital sander and 220 grit, wipe with alcohol. Fill any deep scratches with bondo, then spray. If you do this, the finish will be good-looking, tough and flexible.
Here is a link to the pics, as well as my "Hillbilly Navigation System" (a stick-on compass and a Timex)

Jeff, I'm impressed with the look. I had seen some type of bed liner that had a slight sheen to it. Nice touch on your bike... Mike H. PS, here are some flicks of my 08.... What type of top box are you using. http://picasaweb.google.com/fmh3469/08KLR650E8F

I'm using a militiary surplus aircraft electronics case... painted in bedliner, of course.
You can get 'em for 20 bucks at colemans surplus:

Hey Jeff, I did the same on my 99. I hated the teal green. I did buy some stuff at the local paint and body supplier called Bulldog adhesion promoter and some plastic cleaner. It has stuck pretty well but occasionally I have to touch it up. The tank I painted with regular car paint.

Looks like it's made to have fun and get dirty.

hard cases vs. soft
Regarding revmaatin's query about my hard cases: Martin, you asked about beveled leading edges on aluminum cases. I do not have one of those brands of (more expensive) cases. I've got the standard, smaller Happy Trails cases in back. I did some experimenting with leg placement and such the other day and determined that yes, I could easily drag a foot in soft ground and get it trapped between case and earth.....but the fact that I've not done this yet in 65+ thousand miles also probably means something-or-other. It was obvious that a beveled front bottom edge would make this either less likely or less painful, but there are tradeoffs in cost, availability and storage volume to consider. Note that I mounted the cases myself. I might have mounted them back more or less on the racks, and I might have mounted them higher or lower. These variables will make a definite difference in the likelihood of getting a leg trapped in normal use, i.e., paddling along at slow speed in uncertain terrain. What this implies about a high speed crash I can't quite imagine fully....but note the recent input from another poster who said that his hard cases saved his leg during his own high-speed dismount. YMMV. My current operating instructions suggest that I try not to experience any high speed crashes. You also asked about my mis-fire issues. Hey, thanks for remembering! I've never been able to duplicate the problem. Maybe it was specific to the Republic of Texas....in which case I'll make an effort never to return there on my KLR. In any case, I've run at high speed and low, in hot weather and cold, for another 15,000 miles or so since last October's issues. The most likely suggestion was some form of vapor lock, so I'm prepared with a full roll of reflective, insulating tape---now sunk to the very bottom of those big aluminum cases. The only new clue is that the symptoms back then--at sea level in hundred degree temps and high humidity--closely resembled the way the bike runs at high elevation. I've never altered the stock carburator--no new jets, no shims, no drilling and adjusting the idle mix--and the bike has now spent ample time on all sorts of roads above 14 and 15,000 feet. At that altitude it sputters and misfires when given more than a third or half-throttle, with a remarkable lack of power. This is just what I experienced in Texas, suggesting a rich running condition at that time. But who knows? At some point, according to my personal philosophy regarding mechanical mysteries, you've got to just get out there and ride, trusting the benevolent gods or goddesses of your choice to provide whatever is necessary in the end. This has worked for me for 54 years.....to date. Maybe see you in South Dakota on my way home in late spring or early summer. Until then, safe journeys! the ultimate klr finish
I hate green ....of any color except trees. Red followed by yellow and black are my favorite colors. Ducatis always look good.

I did buy some stuff at the local paint and body supplier called Bulldog adhesion promoter and some plastic cleaner. It has stuck pretty well but occasionally I have to touch it up. Do it to a red 05, or a puke green 06 but to an 98? Horrors. revmaaatin.
