IMHO: Oil for the most part, is oil.  You can use any regular automotive oil as long as it doesn't say "Energy Conserving II" on the bottle.  These oils contain molybdenum friction modifiers that can cause your clutch to slip if you have a bike with a common sump (like the KLR). Personally, I use Castrol SynTec in my KLR after the initial break-in period.  I have NEVER bought motorcycle-specific oil in 25 years of riding.  None of my bikes have ever had to have the engine opened for any reason. There is no sense in arguing with anyone when it comes to what oil to use. The arguement would only go in circles. Some will even argue that you can use generic oil, and get the same results as synthetic. I would never by into that theory. I use Mobil 1 oil in all my cars. I change the oil and filter at 5,000 miles. My daughters car has 160,000+ miles on it, and I still don't have to add oil between changes. My truck has 153,000 miles on it, and it will be about a pint low when i gets to 5,000 miles for the oil change. With this kind of results, a scientist can preach to me until he is blue in the face. I will continue to use Mobil 1.. For the KLR I use Mobil 1 M4XT motorcycle specific oil. Why? Mike Frey replies: But it's all good clean fun until someone's eye is put out! Without an oil discussion, there would be no messages to read! I make many recommendations on oil, but I don't even follow many of my own suggestions. Back (way back) in the 1970s, there weren't many choices in motor oils. We used Castrol GTX 20W-50 exclusively, with no more than 2,000 miles between changes. Working at the Kawasaki shop, we saw many bikes that were rode hard and put up wet, with no abnormal wear issues. I can remember some original Z1 900s with well over 50,000 miles that still ran fine, used no oil, and were not ready for any kind of rebuild. I used K-Mart oil ($0.75 a quart!) in my pickup truck back then and by the time I got rid of it, it had close to 200,000 miles.

Kevin, there are motorcycle touring companies that offer similar tours already, they have a fleet of bikes, know the routes well, and have the contacts and chase trucks lined up that "deep-pocketed" people expect on a vacation/tour. Most importantly, they have experience. For example http://www.edelweissbike.com/ Ask yourself, if some guy asked you to pay a load of money to take you along on a ride that he had never been on before, what would you say? I'm sorry, but I'd laugh in his face. A goal without a plan is just a dream. If you've got the resources, experience, ability, people skills, and contacts to put something like this together, that would be step one. Step two would be figuring out how to market it. A booth at the motorcycle show, a web site, might be places to start. Good luck! Thanks CA Stu
