gas cap stuck (part 2)
The bike fired right up this afternoon. It seems to accelerate smoothly through all rpms. Of course I won't know for sure until I can do a road test. If I have any problems, I'll do as Jeff suggests. I would do as a precautionary measure, but the carb is really a PITA to pull.
The mineral spirits I dumped from the tank had a green tint. But the cap is no closer to coming off, as far as I can tell. I have tried the hammer trick. That is how I finally got the key to turn in the first place (and cracked the cap). As I recall, the locking dogs (old Navy term) are on a cam that extends them when the key is in the lock position. When the key is in the unlock position, springs allow the dogs to retract. I'm assuming the gunk in the tank is stronger than the spring pressure.
Another lister has offered up a cap and key. In the meantime, I'll try some acetone, once the tank has aired out from the mineral spirit soak.
It is scheduled to snow soon. So in the time-vs-money equation, I have the time to try some things.
Thanks,
Bill
