gas cap stuck

The tank hasn't been opened in years. I've finally got the cylinder to turn, after much WD-40 and hammer tapping (only a minor crack to the cap). So the cylinder turns, but the cap still won't open. With my luck, I may have to attempt more drastic measures. Any ideas? I'm thinking of pulling the petcock and dumping some Liquid Wrench or something similar into the tank. Or would that just leak out through the cap's gasket? I really don't want to have to buy a tank just to find out if this thing will still start.
TIA

Bill,
Maybe unplug the fuel line from the fuel tank and hook it to a squeeze
bottle with fuel in it. Fill the carb and then see if the bike will
start. It doesn't take much fuel to start a bike or fill a carb. If you
pull the tank to do this make sure you plug the vacuum line that goes to
the petcock or you'll have a very lean condition and it will be hard
starting for sure.
I suppose a guy could invert the tank, remove the petcock and add a bit
of penetrating oil or kerosene etc to the inside of the tank. Put it
over a container to catch whatever leaks out and then try opening the cap
again.
Sometime a blast or two of compressed air into the key slot will also
help. I know that often frees frozen door locks.

Also, DO NOT try to loosen it with a torch.

I'm a geologist and do a lot of work cleaning up polluted groundwater.
Often, the pollutant is gasoline which will float on top of the water
table. When their is a considerable thickness of gasoline we will install
wells and skim it off the water. We were in the process of installing one
such well and the driller was using a torch to cut the steel well casing to
height. He made the mistake of leaning over the casing while he was cutting
- the well flashed - and well, I'm pretty sure the guy's eyebrows grew back
after a while, and I know for sure he'll never lean over a well while
cutting the casing again!

how much oil is normal for my klr to consume between oil changes

hotrodkawi,
I'm gonna suggest your oil change interval near 3,000 miles is a bit much
for a KLR650. So using a quart in about 3,000 miles of mostly 70 mph or
above seems normal to me. Well, maybe not normal but certainly not
abnormal. : )
If you are interested in changing your oil change interval maybe consider
about 2,000 miles or so. The KLR650 oil compartment is tough on oil.
It's got an internal combustion crankcase, constant mesh transmission and
wet, multi-disk clutch all sharing the same lubricant. Very tough on any
oil you put in there.
