checking engine timing

Post by spike55_bmw » Tue Nov 03, 2009 8:27 am

Yes, timing is not adjustable but one should be able to verify that it is correct at idle and 3000+ rpm (two settings). At the end of the summer (21k miles), I had to change the carb diaphragm, f/r spockets, and chain. Although the bike runs, it is still vibrating more than I'd like above 3000 rpms to the point my hands hurt after 100 miles. I recently pulled the rotor and modified a larger than stock woodruff key to more confidentally maintain the crankshaft to rotor trigger orientation. Still no change. That is why I wanted to 'verify' that the crank, rotor, CDI is functioning properly. I also plan to make sure that the valve timing is correct with the rotor timing. After that, all other options are expensive. I want to be sure that the electronics are working. Don R100, A6F

My quick read of Clymers doesn't seem to indicate a need for a 'window' plug to be placed in the port over the rotor's timing marks to be able to observe while the engine is running. My one and only attempt at running the engine without that plug in, indicates to me that one would get a 10W-40 facial. There is a lot of oil that sprays out of mine. > > > > Just wondering if others have the spray and used a plastic window to be able to look in and see the marks on the rotor while using the timing light? > > > > Don R100, A6F > > > > Static ignition timing is not an adjustment item on the KLR; if it is adjustable, the means is not obvious. Ignition advance is electronic. The factory manual says that "inspection of the timing is not necessary". The timing marks are to position the crankshaft for timing the cams and adjusting the valves. >
