Krokko,
Thanks for the post about Matthew Crawford's book "Shop Class as
Soulcraft".
I did a quick google search last night and read some very interesting
reviews. Found it on amazon and ordered a copy. To get free shipping I
added "The Vincent in the Barn: Great Stories of Motorcycle Archaeology"
by Tom Cotter.
I'm looking forward to some good winter storms in the next few months and
a chance to relax with these books in front of my new wood stove.
Best,

It's that time again boys and gouls... I've been riding the lime green Donkey hard for a few months now since I rebuilt the engine and got it back on the road. I was as happy as a pig in $#!+
Then it wouldn't start Monday. Testing has reveiled a toasty CDI/igniter. Everything else in the ignition system tests good. I'm going to go back through all the wiring and verify solid insulation without shorts and good ground connections. Today I'll start with the voltage regulator and then check other sparky bits in the charging system.
Most of you probably already know this... even those of you, like me, who have known this for years but choose to irrationally beleive that a Radio Shack multimeter will serve my needs.
Cheap tools are crap. I now have several hours diagnosing the various electrical components. First with a $4 Harbor Freight multimeter. Then I bought new batteries for my old $19 Radio Shack auto ranging multimeter. I never got readings anywhere near what the manual stated until I borrowed my buddy's Fluke.
If you have a spare CDI I'd like to buy it.
