"did the do" report

Post by transalp 1 » Mon Oct 19, 2009 7:39 am

My "old" do came out at just over 600 miles from new. It resides in a baggie on the shelf in my kitchen with other "it must not need that any more" m/c parts. Like you experienced, getting the $#@& spring hooked was the most difficult part. Considering we removed cases, rotors, starter gears and all those little washers & stuff, it's not a bad project at all. I did that and the Thermo-Bob mod the same day and had a great time. Glad your project went well, too! =) eddie

(sine qua non).

forks on a '99 klr with 25000km's

Post by sulteck » Tue Oct 20, 2009 8:22 am

I notice a puddle of oil under my left fork today. Is there a web page that shows how to change them. I have changed seals before on other bikes, but I would like a look at what these are like before i get into it. I have to change the rubber fork boot too. any suggestions. I'm not an aggressive driver, but I do off road/ dirt road lots,,, are the progressive fork springs worth it? When I re-install the forks i was thinking about pushing the forks up the steering bracket by an inch and getting a 1" suspension lowering kit(short legs). will there much handling difference? how much clearance do you loose under the motor with this mod.? Thanks Randy

Don't have any R&R instructions but it's really straight forward process. Use the old seal to seat the new one. If the fork leg is warm it comes out easier than if cold. Sit it in the sun if ya can a while. I use round edge of a tire iron as a lever. Be sure to put a rag on the fork leg to protect it. Do one leg at a time and loosen the dampening rod allen before taking the fork tube out or removing the spring. It's a lot easier but can be done afterwards if you use air compressor. Lowering the tubes an inch won't cause you any undue problems with handling or anything else really. It will change the fork rake but don't think enough to notice. Yes, I think Progressive springs help quite a bit. It's a good idea IMO.

Check this site for "E-Z Fork Seal Replacement" I've used this method on 3 sets of KLR forks ... it was E-Z http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/Breakers/8462/KLR650/ForkSeal-RR.html WVDoran Scottsdale, AZ
