I've thought a few times about taking it off and putting the stock shifter back on. And just welding about 1/3 of a large flat washer on the back of the shifter to help protect the case. I like the idea of the shifter bending instead of the shift rod which goes into the engine. I can pretty easily bend a shifter so it works. Bending a shift rod that goes into the engine is a bit tougher and probably more expensive too. If you are concerned about the stock shifter breaking at the weld you could have it rewelded pretty easily. I think the 2008 and later shifters are a little different design from the earlier ones and maybe that would be something to consider.
