I was on a recent trip lately and on my way home I noticed that my bike was running a bit hot. Fine on the interstates, but almost redline at slow speeds. After I got home I went to investigate the problem. I bought the bike used and the previous owner has installed a Dual Star aluminum fanblade. Why, I don`t know? I think they are worthless now. Well the Dual Star fan blade has somehow has fell apart (metal fatigue?). Come to think of it, I did drop the bike once while on my trip (did I mention I am a clutz?) I didn`t think I hurt anything especially since I have those P-D Nerf Bars (tank guards) installed. But appearently I broke the fan blade when I tipped over. The dealer wanted something like $375 for a whole new fan assy. Nothing on E Bay that I could get either. Someone mentioned to me that the Kawasaki Ninja EX500 has fan blade that would work with the KLR. It`s plastic and has two more fan blades than the stock fan blade but works and fits fine. So I gave it a try. I bought a EX500 fan blade, motor, and mounting bracket (fan assy) from E Bay (100`s for sale)for $20 bucks. All I did was take my new fan blade off the motor and installed on my motor on the KLR. It didn`t work at first. Then I replaced the 15 amp blade fuse (that looked fine?) and behold, it works! The electric motor from the EX500 would work too, you just need to add a ground wire to the frame. Anyway, just to let ya all know of my new findings, if you break your fan blade or fry your electric motor on a pre 08 KLR, the Ninja EX500 parts are compatible for dirt cheap. (except the mounting bracket). p.s. Why doesn`t Dual Star ever answer their phone? How do you place an order? Damn.
