I just happened upon an old Cycle World test while I was trying to find out how fast redline is on a KLR. I had mine on a steep downhill run last week and saw 106 mph.
The test showed that 7,500 rpm calculates to 107 mph. I know the KLR reads fast so I obviously didn't reach redline in my hair raising run. If you could get to 7,500, the KLR would probably be showing close to 115mph.

Mine showed 122

It was scary and I will never, ever do it again.

Once was enough for me too.
Did you have stock gearing and OEM sized tires at the time?
What kind of road. I can't see getting to redline on flat ground unless you had a viscious tailwind, and only weigh about 150 lbs.

A friend used to take his out to track day with a 17 inch wheel on the
front and a big fat tire and rim on the back. He told me he regarly
went past 7500 .... Iwant say to 8000. I don't think it has a rev
limiter on it. His is still running.

[dsn_klr650] stearns wal mart atv seat cover for klr s

Carve a bit of plastic from the base of the seat....or the side panel. It allows the strap to snug in perfectly. A kitchen knife will do it.

Anyone have any pictures on how they mounted theirs? I had trouble with the
straps and ended up having to use zip ties. I dont like it.

Rick,
I claim to have the world's fastest KLR.
125mph indicated into a 40mph head wind.
Mothers day, 2008, Highway 34 East of Strugis, West of Ft. Pierre, SD.

Speaking from memory; a conversation with Fred or was it a conversation on the board?--5 years or more ago:
There is only one thing to ever be gained by running the KLR650 engine to redline--and that is more wear.
Somebody that had actually dyno the bike indicated HP/torque was optimum at ~6800 and drops off after that.
I recall the statement, "beyond 6800 was pointless" or words to that effect.
Someone can comment--it may be lower that 6800.
shrug.
Its your bike--red line if you want.
I believed the 'teller' that it was pointless--and still do.
I want mine to be a 80K smile bike.
How about you?

So, one of four things.
1) You were using a wind speed indicator, and your ground speed was ~85mph
2) The 125mph was indicated on truck your KLR was in.
3) You have on of the red KLR's like mine.
4) The speedometer was broken.
